How to stop my dog from jumping on furniture and stairs unsupervised?

I think the only way to prevent this from happening is to remove him to correct him when he jumps on something, and then distract him by having him perform a desired command (go to your place/mat/bed is a good one) for a treat. You will also probably need to restrict access when he is unsupervised by keeping him in another room or a crate. Some dogs are agile and he might never fall, but if you feel what he is doing is unsafe you can start some training. It may take awhile before he stops trying - be persistent and remember to encourage good behavior.

You can try lining the couch cushions with aluminum foil whenever you are not sitting on them. Most dogs hate the feel of it under their feet. Or you can close the door to the room when you're not in it . Be certain not to scold them when you find a mess, unless you are right there when they actually do it. Corrections after the fact will just confuse them and might even make the issue worse. Understand that if they go and are not immediately corrected for it, they have no way of knowing that it is wrong. You may need to keep them on leashes for a time, and scold as soon as one jumps on the couch--then take them right outside to do their business. Of course, if they are allowed on the couch generally, you will have to wait to scold until they are starting to go. As for general learning, I suggest that you enroll them in a basic obedience course right away. You will handle one dog, and need someone to work with the other. Good luck! To keep your puppy as safe as possible start training him now to learn that he shouldn’t jump up on things. It is also very important that you keep your dog and an appropriate weight. The more overweight the more prone they are to have issues with their joints, including their spines. It may also help to get small stairs or ottomans that he can climb onto to get onto the furniture so he won’t have to jump as far. I would recommend a couple of things to help break this habit. First, when you walk in the house, completely ignore Chevy, turn your back to him, don’t look at him in the eye or even correct his behavior, because although it is negative attention, he still wants any type of attention he can get from you. I would also recommend getting a harness that has pressure points over the shoulders as these help prevent jumping up. Any time he jumps up on you lift your leg in the air so that his chest hits your knee. This will be uncomfortable for him and will discourage him from jumping. You should also start working with him on basic commands such as sit/stay/come. Once he has mastered these it should be easier to use commands when he is excitable. I hope this helps. Cats LOVE to jump up on things and get to higher areas. If you don't already have a "cat tree," I would highly recommend you invest in one if you are truly going to try to keep your cats off your furniture. Give her something she CAN be on; spray with catnip spray or sprinkle with catnip. Most of them include scratching posts as well, which you should have a few of throughout your home to prevent her from scratching your carpet or furniture. [Nature's Miracle Pet Block]() or similar product may curb the jumping. I am not certain its safe to use on wood, though. Another thing you can do to deter cats from jumping up onto surfaces is to place aluminum foil on them, they don't like the noise or feel when they jump onto foil. I would recommend keeping Nina off the furniture. She is seeing it as her territory and is defending it. Keep her to the floor and people on furniture at least until she realizes she's not the boss. It's a good idea to get ramps or puppy steps to help Bow on and off the furniture to help prevent jumping, as dogs with long backs such as dachshunds can easily injure their backs. Bow should be able to climb stairs without the use of a ramp, as that does not involve jumping, but if he is having difficulty then a ramp is a good idea. Making sure there is enough traction on the surface (such as using carpeting) is important to reduce the risk of slipping and falling.
