My dog keeps jumping over the fence. How can I stop him from escaping?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Toffee may not know his boundaries well, and assumes he can run everywhere once he's outside. I recommend training him on a leash to show him where his boundaries are. For example, walk him on a leash around the perimeter of your property, and never beyond. You can make him sit at the edge of your property, and give him a treat. Do this at multiple points around your property. Since he has run off before, he may not learn the true edge of his property. The safest thing to do is to take him out on a leash and not let him run freely. He is otherwise at risk of getting lost, or even hit by a vehicle. I hope this is helpful.

Hello, potty to hear about your pup. Theres likely no specific reason as to why she is wanting to be outside. She is likely leaving out of curiosity and stimulation, not necessarily to mate, but also due to different smells and other animals. Your dog likely enjoys her time outside her house and wants to continue to explore, this could be hazardous to her of course so your concern is understandable. There are multiple products to prevent this behaviors such as a shock fence, however these may also cause some pain and discomfort. You can try to fulfill her curiosity with longer more frequent walks then at home keep the doors close so that she does not leave. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Jumping on people to greet them is a very common and normal dog behavior - but since most humans don't appreciate it, it's definitely a good idea to teach him not to do this :) I would recommend keeping Scooby on-leash when he meets people, so that you can prevent him from continuing to practice this behavior. Stand at a distance from the person, and ask him to sit - reward with a treat when he does. Then move a bit closer, and ask him to sit again. If he gets too excited, just back up to where he can be calm again and focus, then try again. Eventually, with practice, you should be able to walk him right up to a person and ask him to sit before they pet him. These are rolling bars that are installed on the top of the wall and when Murphy encounters the roll bar, it rolls on him preventing him from catching his footing and going over the wall. You can also look at installing an invisible fence to prevent him from going near the wall around the yard. I hope this helps! I would recommend a couple of things to help break this habit. First, when you walk in the house, completely ignore Chevy, turn your back to him, don’t look at him in the eye or even correct his behavior, because although it is negative attention, he still wants any type of attention he can get from you. I would also recommend getting a harness that has pressure points over the shoulders as these help prevent jumping up. Any time he jumps up on you lift your leg in the air so that his chest hits your knee. This will be uncomfortable for him and will discourage him from jumping. You should also start working with him on basic commands such as sit/stay/come. Once he has mastered these it should be easier to use commands when he is excitable. I hope this helps. This is a very frustrating behavior to have to deal with. Sometimes invisible fence works. Other times a tie-down or run system is effective. Another solution is do you have a trainer work with you and your dogs in your home to address this issue. Punishment is a tricky method as it has to be done immediately after the behavior in order to be effective as well as it could backfire and cause aggression.

Keep a leash on him and when he attempts to bolt out the door, give the leash a firm tug and tell him a command such as "sit". Have many treats handy and give him a few treats when he listens and sits. If training is not going as planned, you can use an electric collar and whenever he goes near the door, you can apply a low voltage shock to deter the behavior. I hope this helps!
