My dog bolts out the door when it opens. How can I train him to stop?

The only way to effectively address this problem is to keep Bryanna on a leash whenever you are in doorways until she learns to act appropriately. She must be rewarded and praised for waiting at doorways, and then rewarded and praised more when entering / exiting at the appropriate times. At first, I would make sure she stops at every door for at least a few seconds so she understands precisely it is that she is being rewarded for. Once she begins to understand this, you can start experimenting with the leash off. You should start thinking of a word you want to use that indicates to Bryanna that it is OK for her to proceed. It should be a different command than a the simple "come" or "lets go" that you likely already use for many other situations in life. Hope this helps. These can help stop the pulling behavior. You may also look into the low voltage shock collars. These collars emit a small shock that is similar to being snapped by a rubber band. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Toffee may not know his boundaries well, and assumes he can run everywhere once he's outside. I recommend training him on a leash to show him where his boundaries are. For example, walk him on a leash around the perimeter of your property, and never beyond. You can make him sit at the edge of your property, and give him a treat. Do this at multiple points around your property. Since he has run off before, he may not learn the true edge of his property. The safest thing to do is to take him out on a leash and not let him run freely. He is otherwise at risk of getting lost, or even hit by a vehicle. I hope this is helpful.

I would recommend leash training her and using treats as positive reinforcement for good behavior. If she stops biting you when you say "off" or "no" then you should reward her with a treat. Another training method is negative reinforcement. When she does the undesired behavior, a spray bottle filled with water is used to spritz her in the face while saying "off" or "no". Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! You should start with one on one training and NO walks until he is trained. Hire a trainer. Use positive reinforcement and train him to "sit, "heal" on a leash, "look," and "leave it." Also get him used to the gentle leader harness that goes on the muzzle, this allows for amazing head control. Once he is used to the harness and is able to listen to you at home, practice outside on a leash. When people approach ask him to "look" at you and sit. When he does this and ignores the person passing by he gets a treat and verbal praise. You can do this with people you know first.
