My dog barks early morning for attention. How do I stop him?

Hi and thank you for posting your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Right now, it seems like he barks and coming downstairs may actually be rewarding the barking behavior. He has learned that barking will bring you downstairs. To combat this behavior, you may want to try the following: When your dog begins to bark in the morning, do not walk downstairs until he is quiet. This may take some patience. Once you are downstairs, reward with praise and a treat he really really likes. Do this several days in a row and he will learn to be quiet in the morning and that barking does not lead to you coming downstairs. As a rule of thumb in training, always reward desired behavior and ignore undesirable behavior. I hope this has helped and best of luck to you and Ziggy.

Excessive barking in a young dog of Spyro's age is not at all uncommon. If you noting barking fits at certain times, it is extremely important not to reinforce these behaviors. For instance, if you note that he is barking at you in the house, do not reward this behavior by taking him outside to play. You are inadvertently telling him this is a preferable behavior. In the event that he is barking at you in the house, the best thing for you to do is walk way and ignore him (I realize this might be difficult, but in the end it is going to pay off). Some dogs will never stop barking no matter what, and ultimately require something external to discourage them. I usually tell people to start with something like a citronella collar. This is something that sprays a harmless liquid that your dog will dislike the odor off every time it barks. Many dogs will stop barking at the mere site of these, while others will show no response. In the worst cases, shock collars can be used, but I do not recommend their use unless all other options have failed multiple times. I would also recommend consulting a trainer so they can show you how to use a shock collar safely and effectively, as improper use can result in dangerous consequences. Hope this makes sense.

Has he always done this, or is it a new behavior? Had he been sleeping through the night at any time? The fact that he is continuing to bark, even after he's been out, tells me one of two things: either there's a sound (that you may not even be able to hear) that is disturbing or exciting him, or he has you trained to get up when he barks. To a dog who is seeking attention, any attention, even negative (such as shouting at him) is satisfying. If you are sure his bathroom needs have been met, try ignoring Wish. Do not respond in any way to his barking. Understand that, since you have reacted before, he will probably up the ante and bark more, or louder, to get the response he is used to. Don't give in!!! That will just make it harder to correct. After a few days to a week, when his behavior is not getting the desired result, he will stop. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Charlie looks like a sweet girl! I would recommend using a spray bottle filled with water and using this every time she barks. You can also use an empty can and fill it with coins and shake it at Charlie every time she barks to help deter her from barking. Citronella collars are also a good option. You can find these collars online quite easily. These collars will spray a fine mist of citronella in front of Charlie's face every time she barks. I hope this helps! It sounds like Siri is trying to train you. The best way to get him to stop without significant intervention is positive reinforcement. In this case, you will be reinforcing the absence of a behavior. I don't know where he stands in reference to you while he is barking, but hopefully it is within a reasonable voice's reach. You need to start rewarding Siri for periods of quiet (I would say if he is in a barking fit, any period of silence greater than 10-15 seconds should be rewarded). You should also start to come up with a word you phrase you use to ask Siri to quiet down. It doesn't matter what you choose as long as you are consistent. If this fails, there are bark collars out there of all different types. On small dogs I essentially never, ever recommended any collar that produces an electric shock. However, there are citronella collars that spray an unpleasant liquid (not bothersome to humans) at the dog any time it barks above a certain volume. It is extremely effective on some dogs and completely harmless. Hope this helps.

I would suggest using a citronella spray collar or bark collar and see if this helps deter Austin from barking. You can also try using a spray bottle filled with water and every time he barks, spray him in the face lightly and say "no!" or use a can filled with coins and shake it loudly and throw it on the ground near Austin when he barks and say "no!". I hope this helps with the barking! These tricks worked great for my own pet but it took patience and persistence. I hope this helps!
