How can I stop my dog from chasing and playfully biting my kitten?

Hello. You do not say how old the kitten is, but this may just be the kitten learning how far he can push his older companion, or he is beginning to learn some dominance. Discourage the behavior by gently shooing the kitten away & distracting him with a treat or some play time with you. I have a cat that every time he sees my little dog sitting on my lap, he has to jump up & start chewing on the poor dog's ear. We then have to take turns to see who gets to sit in my lap. The best thing to do is to allow the kittens to play together but when the play is begins to turn rough immediately separate them. This way your cat will begin to understand that this particular behavior (rough play) will result in a negative outcome (not getting to play). Training training and again training is the answer to your question!! Start with simple commands everyday, for 10-15 minutes. Yes rough play can be definitively dangerous for your cat (or for Jack!!) and I would monitor them very closely or even try to keep them separated until Jack is not disciplined enough.. Bandit is a very young kitten and biting is how kittens tend to explore the world. The best thing to do is to just stop playing and walk away when he gets too excited, and refuse to interact until he has calmed down. Signs this is incoming/Bandit is getting over stimulated can include rapid tail flicking, pinned ears, stiff body, large pupils, etc. Once calm, play can resume with a toy that he can either bite on or chase, or something such as a laser pointer or teaser toy that he can pounce without coming into contact with your hand. Luckily, over time, kittens will settle down and chew on things less, and by not allowing him to nibble on you, will learn that it is appropriate to chew on other things instead.

This will take some time because Koda is a puppy and he thinks he is playing. A good first step is to just stop playtime when Chandler starts to get too rough. If the fun stops the moment he gets too agitated and bites, he'll quickly learn that it's not fun to keep doing so. Once he has calmed down, you can then try another play session, again stopping if he gets too excited or agitated. Another solution is to play with a toy such as a feather on a string, where he can pounce and bite without coming close to your arms or hands. Offering a toy that he can chew on or bat with his paws and bite can also keep his mouth occupied instead of letting him munch on you. Laser pointers, toys that run around or move, etc, can also help get out that energy on things safer than your arms and hands.

Encourage play with a "wrestling toy" by rubbing it against your kitten's belly when he wants to play roughly—and be sure to get your hand out of the way as soon as he accepts the toy.
