My dog is biting. How do I stop it without scaring him or classes?

Depending on how they're presented, the toy or treat "distractions" may be interpreted by Toffee as rewards for his behavior! Isolating a dog means absolutely nothing, because has no way to associate the isolation with his actions. Any correction must be given within ONE SECOND of the misstep in order for the dog to make the connection. You can say a firm "NO!" but be sure there is no emotion in your voice. If yours is an excited "no," it will just get him more hyper. Then immediately go into another room and shut the door. It depends on what Tootie is nipping for. If it is when she plays without toys, I recommend saying "No" when she does it and give her a toy to play with instead. When she plays with the toy tell her "good girl". If she is nipping over a toy, I would stop playing with that toy all together. Continue to positively reinforce good behaviors, like playing calmly without biting, and give lots of praise when she is playing nice. When she starts to nip, take your attention away, until she sits or settles down. When she does, give lots of praise. I am so sorry that you are experiencing these problems with biting with Olie. I am sure it is very upsetting for you. First of all rest assured that this is a very normal puppy behaviour. Puppies learn through play biting and it is part of our role as pet parents to help them learn limits. I would not attempt negative reinforcement such as striking Olie or speaking harshly as this will potentially create more serious behaviour issues such as anxiety and fear-aggression. Try some calm corrections and positive reinforcement. If Olie bites you, simply say in a calm voice "no" and stop interacting with her for a few moments. This over time will teach him that biting is not a desired form of play. Also try reinforcing him as he starts to play in a good way by not biting, and give him a small training treat. If Olie does manage to bite hard enough to break the skin be careful of a possible infection. Monitor your wound for heat. Swelling, or discharge. Make an appointment with your doctor if this occurs. If you are struggling with the biting after a couple of weeks of the above suggested training methods, consider puppy socialisation classes or potentially a few sessions with a behaviourist. Other games which may be fun with Olie to redirect him in he is biting too rough, are hide and go seek either with you and another person, or you hide his toys and he has to find them. I would recommend starting on some basic commands with Panda. This would include sit, come and stay. That way when Panda starts to chew on your feet you can re direct her into a basic command. I would reward her with a treat so he knows that the command is the way she should be acting, I would also recommend starting her in puppy training classes to help with her attention. First off, I highly recommend a beginner training class with Nero, and also getting him into something fun and active such as agility or flyball, as Sheepdogs are extremely smart and extremely prone to boredom. Sometimes, having a focused training class or activity can help get out that energy and put your dog to work so they are less likely to become bored and destructive. As for nipping, there are a few things you can try out: Have a toy or bone handy that you can put in Nero's mouth when he gets excited to give him something to chew on and be mouthy with other than your hands/arms. If he picks up a toy on his own, be sure to give him lots of praise to help teach him this is a good thing. If walking away or yelping doesn't help, teaching him something such as "settle" can help him to focus on calming down and relaxing instead of ramping up the behavior with more excitement. Grabbing his collar and holding him down is likely just exciting him more, but focusing on training such as sit, down, settle, etc can divert his focus into something productive instead. Practice "airplaning" treats. This involves having Nero sit and slowly bringing a treat down to him. If he jumps up or gets excited, you have him sit again and start over. Once he can focus on staying still, he gets the treat. This can help teach some impulse control and reduce excitement behavior. Give him a job! Redirect his attention by telling him to go find a specific toy or bone. This can help him get out that excited energy and focus on chewing on the toy, instead of jumping all over you.

Its crucially important to only work with a trainer who uses positive reinforcement and ideally is certified through the Karen Pryor academy or CPDT-KA (which stands for Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed). He's probably finding it to be a super fun game that you two are playing. So, I would recommend taking the opposite pathway of totally ignoring inappropriate behavior. You mentioned that you tried this but he kept biting - you need to also move away and get space between you. You can use a leash or a crate, or a door to create space.
