My puppy bites aggressively during teething. What can I do to stop it?

I would recommend trying to stay away from scaring Toffee. I would recommend when Toffee bites to replace th object with a toy he is allowed to chew on. Also I would recommend working on some basic commands like sit, come and stay. That way when he starts to bite you can re direct his attention and tell him to sit. The last option is to just walk away so Toffee knows that biting is not play time. I would start with those steps but you really need to keep it consistent. hope that helps

I would not attempt negative reinforcement such as striking Olie or speaking harshly as this will potentially create more serious behaviour issues such as anxiety and fear-aggression. Try some calm corrections and positive reinforcement. If Olie bites you, simply say in a calm voice "no" and stop interacting with her for a few moments. This over time will teach him that biting is not a desired form of play. Also try reinforcing him as he starts to play in a good way by not biting, and give him a small training treat. If Olie does manage to bite hard enough to break the skin be careful of a possible infection. Monitor your wound for heat. Swelling, or discharge. Make an appointment with your doctor if this occurs. If you are struggling with the biting after a couple of weeks of the above suggested training methods, consider puppy socialisation classes or potentially a few sessions with a behaviourist. Other games which may be fun with Olie to redirect him in he is biting too rough, are hide and go seek either with you and another person, or you hide his toys and he has to find them. You can also try putting these toys in the freezer, which some puppies like as it helps soothe their irritated gums. When Shadow tries to bite you, give a firm "ow" or "no". Never hit him or use any other form of physical punishment. Instead, offer him his chew toy to play with on his own. Walk away, cross your arms and legs and do not give him any further attention. If this does not work, you may need to find a toy that is more rewarding for him, such as putting something even more tasty into the toy. It’s important to not accidentally reward attention seeking behavior by giving attention. If Sweety is trying to bite, give her a toy or something to chew on. You can then praise her for chewing on the correct thing. If she’s being persistent you should then remove yourself or her from the room. It may seem like it’s not working for awhile but in time she’ll learn that biting doesn’t get attention.

Canine aggression is a complex behavior as it can stem from dominance, possessiveness, fear, anxiety, resource guarding or a combination. This is very normal behavior for puppies and it sounds like you’re already on the right track. If Fry insists on biting you instead of a toy play time is over and you should remove attention and try again in a few minutes. It will feel like you’re not making progress if you’re consistent he will outgrow this stage. If you think he seems to be biting when he’s scared or showing signs of true aggression you should ask your vet about referral to a behaviorist.
