Why is my spayed dog's private area red with green discharge?

Poor giril. This looks like dark serosanguinous fluid, which could indicate an infection of her uterus. This often occurs post-labor or post-menstrual cycle. I would highly recommend taking Willow to your local vet to have her blood tested and vitals checked (temperature especially) to make sure she is ok. Often-times if there is an infection of the uterus (pyometra), the pet will have a fever, decreased appetite, sometimes vomiting and loose stool. She could have a uterine stump infection (the part of the uterus that is left), a urinary tract infection or a vaginitis. Harley should be seen by the Vet that did the surgery today before the weekend. They will likely put her on antibiotics to see if that takes care of it. Good luck!

Discharge from this area can either be coming from the urinary tract (uti, etc ) or reproductive tract. Likely your vet will rule out uti first with a urinalysis and urine culture. A sterile vaginal exam may also be recommended. If persistent and not related to a uti then it may become important to make sure she was properly spayed. I'm sorry Piggy isn't doing well! The lump under her skin could be caused by a local inflammatory reaction to the vaccine, but it should have resolved by now. That is something that should be seen by the vet. I am very concerned that she has a greenish discharge coming from her vagina, and she could be suffering from a condition called a pyometra. If only her ovaries were removed during her spay, then the uterus remains and is still prone to developing an infection. She could also have a stump pyometra. This is when the remnants of the uterus become infected, and while it's not common, it is serious when it occurs. Finally, she could be suffering from vaginitis, an infection of the vagina. Homeopathic sepia will not treat any of these. If she still has her uterus, it will need to be removed and she will need antibiotics. A stump pyometra will also need to be treated surgically, and will require antibiotics. Vaginitis requires antibiotics. She should see a vet immediately to diagnose what is causing the green discharge so she can be treated. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Vaginal discharge can be caused by a number of things. Both the urethra and vaginal openings exit the vaginal/vulvar area so discharge could indicate a problem with the urinary tract or with the reproductive tract. With any strange discharge, it is a good idea to schedule a veterinary appointment to check it out. If the discharge becomes cloudy, green or yellow in color, it is best to seek veterinary care as soon as possible as that may indicate something more serious such as a uterine infection (in unspayed females, but can occur if part of the uterine stump is left during a spay).

Hi ! If Holly is well in herself, eating bright passing normal feaces and urine, I would not worry. A little bit of vaginal discharge is expected folllowing the surgery and should gradually decrease and disappear. It can take sometimes a couple of weeks for it to settle completely. If there is a discolored discharge, then she will need to see a vet. If there is an infected uterus, antibiotics keep it at bay but generally do not clear it completely. Often times surgery to spay her is indicated along with antibiotics. IF it goes untreated it can make her very ill and be life threatening.
