My dog has red vaginal discharge. Can I treat her infection at home?

The question is, is it an vaginal infection or a uterine infection? if she is lethargic, drinking a lot, seems bloated and in pain then it is most likely a pyometra (uterine infection), this will require urgent surgery to have the uterus removed as medical treatment fail to resolve this condition in the vast majority of cases. if she is suffering from a vaginal infection this can be treated with antibiotics prescribed by your vet. either way you will have to take her to a veterinarian ASAP.

It sounds like your vet may have been suspicious she had a pyometra and tried treating it medically with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Unfortunately the medical route often isn't successful, and surgery is needed to treat it. This means spaying her. I would take her back into the vet immediately, as this is a medical emergency. Some discharge is normal but it is generally clearish or slightly opaque. Vaginal discharge can indicate an infection in the uterus. I recommend to have her examined today in case this discharge is related to a uterine infection. Uterine infections can lead to a life threatening septicemia so it's best to play it safe. Uh-oh, this is quite concerning. This could be vaginitis, but probably is a uterine infection (pyometra, open). This is an emergency and she needs to be seen by a vet preferably today. Your vet will give Daisy a thorough exam, and then probably will want to do an x-ray to verify his diagnosis. Treatment is surgery to remove the uterus with all the pus contained. Antibiotics sometimes work, however that would only delay the surgery as she will have another uterine infection when she has her next heat. Please take her to your veterinarian ASAP.

Spaying (ovariohysterectomy) is likely the best treatment. If the infection is limited to the reproductive tract, then removing the organ is the most efficient way of removing the problem. This surgery shouldn't lead to spread of infection if done properly since the uterus is removed completely without needing to cut into it.

Hello, sorry to hear about Willow. This could be associated with an infection or her vagina or lower reproductive tract. Rarely, dogs may develop an infection of her uterine stump which is left after spay surgery. She may require more diagnostics and medications to treat this infection. Your veterinarian may be able to offer further diagnostics including an abdominal ultrasound and bloodwork to rule out a stump pyometra. A cytology of her discharge could also confirm an infection.
