Is sorbitol safe for my 3.5 pound Yorkie's constipation or stool?

Sorbitol is essentially safe and unlikely to cause your pet significant illness; it may, however, cause minor to moderate stomach upset. As far as I'm aware, there are no interactions between ingredients, however if Romeo is experiencing constipation, I would let your vet know just to make sure it's still OK to give him the lactulose if it was originally prescribed for something else. Since melatonin can sometimes cause a bit of dehydration, making sure he's drinking enough water can also help with hard stool.

Hi, the best course of action is trying to understand the cause of constipation and address it. If it is not possible, try to help making sure that Maddy is hydrated and that she has a reasonable amount of fibre in her diet. In terms of ailments you can use, what is safe in dogs to use is lactulose, you could start with a small dose such as 2.5 ml twice a day and if it seems to help try to reduce it to once a day. I would recommend that Oliver get checked out by a vet. If he is very constipated, then often he will need lots of fluids and medications to help clear his colon. In more severe cases, they may need sedation so that the hard feces can be manually removed. A decrease in appetite associated with constipation usually indicates that it is very severe, and making him eat more food that cannot come out the back end may make the problem worse. In dogs that are sensitive to milk products, cottage cheese could cause diarrhea, but is not necessarily a recommend treatment for constipation.

Unfortunately I cannot legally recommend using a laxative on Sophie without seeing her in person. Because she has been constipated for a few days and is now yelping when trying to go, it's time to see the vet to get treated. Please take her into a vet today.

As long as Molly is not straining to pass stools, is not vomiting and her energy level is high, you should monitor her at home. Most of the dogs will poop within 1hr after eating, so please see if she poops after the next meal. However, if she does not pass any stools in the next 12-18hrs, a visit to your local vets will be recommended. The tablets that she is taking don't have any effect on the defecation but they may cause mild diarrhea.

There are no known toxicity issues with prunes or prune juice in dogs, but I wouldn't recommend giving it due to the risk of causing GI upset or diarrhea. If you want something to soften BB's stool, there are a number of both over-the-counter and prescription laxatives that are commonly used in dogs including Metamucil, Miralax, and lactulose. By law, we cannot recommend any specific medication for your dog (even over the counter) or provide dosing information without an exam, but I would encourage you to call your vet to ask them what they would suggest - if they have seen BB recently, they can legally give you more specific advice :)
