How to soothe my dog's irritated ears after ear wax oil treatment?

Although relatively safe I would recommend using an alcohol free dog ear cleanser which is correctly balanced to help remove wax and help dry the ear also. If painful your dog should be assessed by your vet first to rule out infection or a ruptured ear drum and they can demonstrate safe ear cleaning and preventive care

They appear swollen and rough on the ear margins. Those are signs of an infection. You will need a prescription from the vet for medication to completely treat it. Until then the best thing is actually use an ear wash to keep it clean. I would not use Q tips anymore. But if you can get an ear cleaner from a pet store, just rinsing them daily will help dilute out the bacteria/yeast causing the problem and soften the edges to help. This will also help loosen up whatever is inside so every time he shakes, it will wash more debris out. It is best to wipe it with a clean tissue or cotton ball.

I bet that does burn Leeroy's ears! Witch Hazel can also burn and I do not recommend to put that in his ears again. Only use products that are tested and safe to use in pet's ears. Your veterinarian will carry a variety of ear flushes that will help to flush out the ears without causing additional damage. The pet store will also carry ear flushes that are generally safe. You will want to get a routine cleaner that is NOT medicated. Use this to copiously flush out his ear and use something soft like a cotton ball or gauze pad to dry out the liquid. Use the cleanser, massage the ear, wipe out the liquid. Repeat this several times. If this does not help after a few days or if LeeRoy is still uncomfortable, have him seen by the doctor. I hope Pippi is feeling better today! Theres not a ton of options at home to make her feel better. She needs to get medications and possibly a steroid or some other anti-inflammatory to treat the ear infection. You did well by cleaning out the ear. That probably gave her some relief. Gently massaging the ear can also help. You can also apply a cool compress to the external portion of the ear. The doctor will be able to provide medication that can really get Pippi the most comfortable the fastest. I hope this helps!

You could try contacting your local vets office or pet store for an ear cleanser suitable for use in cats (alcohol free only) to see if this will remove the mites, wax and oil. Gently fill the ear with the solution, rub the side of the ear for 1minute then allow her to shake out excess, wipe outer ear with cotton wool if she will allow this and is not too painful. Do not force liquid into ear as this can irritate or even burst the ear drum causing pain. You should contact your vet to discuss options of pain relief, your local humane society may have information on subsidized clinics in your area

If the q-tip comes out black, then there is an excess of ear wax and likely an infection. The infection can be caused by bacteria, yeast, or even mites. Ear infections in dogs are very itchy, and often require prescription medications to help clear them quickly and manage the itch. The first step in treating an ear infection is breaking down the large chunks of wax and getting them out of the way so that medications can get to the surface of the ear. I like ear cleaners like Dechra Malacetic Ultra Otic that are antibacterial and antifungal. If you clean Remington's ears twice a day for a couple of days and he is still itching, he will need to go to the vet for prescription medications.

Most ear ointments are a little oily or thick in order to stay in contact with the skin inside the ear canal as long as possible, so it is absolutely normal to feel the ointment in the ear later on. I usually recommend a cleaning solution along with ointment, and you can ask your vet if there is a cleaning solution that they recommend to use to clear out the remaining ointment before applying the next dose. I also would get an E-collar (or "cone") for Norman to prevent him from scratching his ear so that he doesn't cause any additional trauma. You should definitely continue to ointment to continue treating the infection, stopping could make the infection worse and more difficult to treat in the future.
