How to best socialize my 3-month-old German Shepherd puppy?

Socialization is key, and that means exposure to everything! Make it a fun game and every time your dog hears or sees something new, praise them and give them a treat when they show interest in it. If he's too scared, move him to a distance where he isn't as startled, and then treat and praise from there until he is more comfortable. If he's very scared, or runs away, taking a break and trying again later is best, as you don't want to force him into it and then turn it into something bad instead of something good. Since Tobi is so young, everything is probably very scary and new right now, and a lot of this will get better with time and practice. I also highly recommend a puppy kindergarten class once he is old enough and vaccinated so that you can practice learning together in a structured environment.

Great question! You are absolutely correct that it's about raising the dog correctly. German Shepherds can be excellent, friendly, wonderful family dogs, but you do have to make sure you start training them from the very beginning. They can be very stubborn and do require a lot of training, but if you are committed to socializing it, behavior classes, and being consistent, you can have a wonderful dog. Pups should not be away from their mother and siblings until at least 8-10weeks of age to ensure they are fully weaned, have received at least one vaccination and have had an appropriate amount of socialisation with their litter mates and mother, early separation increases anxiety and aggression in many cases. HE should be fed a high quality puppy food and fresh water to drink 15-18months to ensure optimal development and to reduce the risk of growth deformities and joint disease. Be sure to deworm him regularly. The age at which he can be left in an outdoor enclosure depends on your local climate - your local vets office would be best placed to advise on local risk factors for both climate, vaccination schedules and parasite prevention (including ticks) - I recommend you call in and have a chat with them before you bring any puppy home

Make sure everyone in your household interacts with him to get him used to being touched and handled and used to people. He is too young to be around other dogs yet. But once he has his vaccines completed you can enroll him in doggy day care or a group obedience class to help with social skills

The ideal age for socialization is usually up until 1 year of age though in theory any dog can get used to anything and be trainable at any point in life. It does not stop at 16 weeks of age.
