There are certain physical signs that a dog is pregnant, such as an enlarged belly, enlarged nipples, increased appetite, lethargy, firm abdomen, and nesting behavior among others. The best way to know if Gypsie is pregnant, however, is to have her seen by a vet. The vet can do a blood test, x-rays, and/or ultrasound to confirm if she is pregnant. Veterinary care during a dog's pregnancy is quite important, so she should see a vet as soon as possible. If she is far along enough in her pregnancy, the vet can use x-rays and/or ultrasound to tell you how many puppies she is carrying.

Hello. A dog should not put on weight just from one meal, but if it was a fatty one, she might show some distention from gas. Since she is an older girl, it might be a good idea to have her looked at by your veterinarian to see if she is indeed pregnant. It is a good idea to get Martina spayed if she isn't pregnant, to not only prevent future pregnancies, but to also prevent other disease processes like Pyometra (acute infected uterus) and mammary cancer from forming later on in her life.

The only way to know for sure Zyra is pregnant is have her seen by a vet in another couple of weeks for x-rays and a blood test looking for the hormone relaxin to confirm that she is pregnant. Thanks for your question. There are tests that can be done by your veterinarian to determine if Soska is pregnant after about 3 weeks including ultrasound, x-ray, and blood tests. As she is farther along you will notice enlargement of her nipples and mammary glands. Often a decrease in energy is noticed as early as two weeks into pregnancy, although this isn't always the case. You do not need to limit her activity, she will do this on her own. There is not a simple pregnancy test like we have for people, so you will have to wait a bit to know for sure. I hope this helps.

Unfortunately you can't tell if this is a real pregnancy or a false pregnancy without an ultrasound at this stage. At 22 days, the fetal heart beats can be detected on an ultrasound. At 45 days, the fetal skeletons can be seen on an x-ray. Depending on the size of the mother and the amount of puppies, the fetuses may be palpated in the final weeks of pregnancy. Otherwise she will have up to two litters of puppies a year. Not only is this a lot of strain on her body, but it contributes to pet over population. There is always a possibility of any female dog who is not spayed for pregnancy. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian. She looks small and so it would be recommended to take a radiograph to see if puppies are present or not. Small breed dogs are more prone to problems giving birth so it is important to know how many puppies to expect. She likely is not caught up on vaccines or anything either if you have not had her examined yet so you need to discuss the preventive care that she needs to keep her and the puppies healthy if she is pregnant.
