When should my Shih Tzu puppy get his second shot and meet other dogs?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | 1 month and 21 days old

I just got a Shih Tzu puppy (was born 10/18/2017), he has his first vaccination, I was wondering when I should take him in to get his second vaccination and when can he come in contact with other dogs?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Ollile would need his next DHPP vaccine 3-4 weeks after the first one was given. I only recommend that puppy's still getting their vaccines only contact other dogs that are known to be completely vaccinated and other puppies that are up to date and NOT sick. That means no dog parks or strange dogs. It is fine to walk around the neighborhood and on side walks in parks. I deem them safe to go to dog parks 2 weeks after their final puppy shots.

Hello. Your new puppy can interact with any of your own pets if they have been fully vaccinated. Otherwise, we recommend keeping your puppy at home & away from all other dogs, dog parks, or any places where dogs might congregate until the full series of puppy shots are finished. That means he will be able to interact with other dogs after he has received his 12 week & 16 week boosters. Keep him well protected until he is 4 months of age. I should also mention that if your puppy receives his first puppy shot at around 6 weeks of age, he should actually be vaccinated again at 8 weeks ( a lot of breeders like to vaccinate at 6 weeks, but this is too early ). For his own safety and the safety of other dogs, it would be best to wait until he has received his complete first year round of vaccines including the second parvovirus vaccine which usually is given at around 4-5 months of age though that depends on when they received the first set of vaccines. My 10-week puppy's vaccines need restarting. When can he go outside?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At 10 weeks of age, regardless of what vaccines Ted had previously, he is not old enough to consider him fully vaccinated. We vaccinate starting at 7-8 weeks and give the DHPP (or whatever version of that vaccine) every 3-4 weeks until they receive TWO past 12 weeks of age. I have seen dogs who got their last vaccine at 12 weeks still get parvo (at risk breeds like rottweilers and pit bulls). So while I am not in full agreement with the reason you were given I agree that he is not fully vaccinated yet. There is a fine line between protecting him from disease and socialization. He can be socialized with well vaccinated dogs and can go for walks on side walks. He shouldn't play with puppies or dogs where you do not know their vaccine status or play in dog parks. When can my puppy safely socialize with older dogs after first shots?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding O'Malley. It is a balancing act in young puppies as you want to provide them with plenty of socialization, but they are at risk as they are not fully vaccinated. She can be enrolled in puppy classes as long as vaccines are required. If you have a friend with a fully vaccinated dog, this could be a good playmate. I would avoid dog parks, group play scenarios or other areas frequented by potentially unvaccinated or improperly vaccinated dogs. I hope this information helps!

Is it safe to walk my 7-week-old puppy after his first shots?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and congratulations on your new puppy! Unfortunately, Maximus is not fully vaccinated at this point, so he should not be going outside. Depending on your state, he can be fully vaccinated by 12 or 16 weeks. If this was his first round of shots, he will need a booster in 2-4 weeks and then his Rabies vaccine at 12-16 weeks as well as his last booster. Maximus should have minimal contact with other dogs (even where other dogs have gone to the bathroom) as you can’t be sure they are not carrying any of the viruses that Maximus is not vaccinated for that can make him very sick. I know it is difficult to keep a large active puppy inside, but your vet can work with you to have Maximus fully vaccinated in a reasonable amount of time.

Can my 9-week puppy play with vaccinated adult dogs after first shot?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think that socialization is important at this age. There is a fine line between preventing disease and socialization. It is fine for Coco to play with healthy fully vaccinated adult dogs and puppies. No dog parks. She can be walked on side walks. I would always pick up the stool if you think that Coco may want to start eating stool. Teach her to "leave it" early on. Leash walk until you are sure she is trained and isn't going to eat her stool. Stool eating is behavioral and it is hard to go back and teach them not too. Much easier to never allow them to start. Can my 9-week puppies with different shots be together or go out?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Giving one vaccine does not mean protection. The whole cycle for the specific disease that it is used has to be completed and at least 3-4 weeks pass for the dog to really be protected against a disease as that is what the immune system needs to build immunity. So the pup that is vaccinated is not protected yet and should not be taken outside and your other pup should also get vaccinated to get protection against those preventable diseases. Best of luck!
