My Shih Tzu puppy has a long nose. Is it truly a purebred Shih Tzu?

What an adorable puppy! From the photo, his snout looks pretty normal. It may take a while for him to "grow into" the traditional Shih Tzu "mushy" face and there is some normal variation between faces in dogs, with some having longer/shorter faces than others. I hope this helps!

It is possible to have shorter hair depending on their genetics. For instance (just an example), if long hair is a dominant gene and and short hair is a recessive gene then there is a chance for a puppy to have two of the recessive genes and end up with shorter hair. As long as you know there were not any other intact males around while she is in heat (the puppies can have different fathers), then I expect that she is full blooded and I would not worry about her shorter hair! She is just special! :) As she gets older, her hair may get longer.

Your puppy does look like it could be a chihuahua, but it's absolutely impossible for me to say if it is purebred or not just by looking at a picture. You can do a DNA test on your puppy called a Wisdom Panel, and that will give you the exact genetic make up of your puppy letting you know if it's purebred or not. https://www.wisdompanel.com I hope this helps!

These look more like a Shih Tzu than a dachshund. It’s awfully early to be able to tell for sure. They don’t look as long bodied as a dachshund and the thicker coat and rounder snout look more like a Shih Tzu. They are adorable regardless. You can always get a DNA test done. Hi, it looks like these puppies could be Chihuahua x shih tzu. It is impossible to tell for sure 100% if they are just a cross between these breeds or if there is a small percentage of other breeds in there but there is definitely some chihuahua and some shih tzu as far as I can tell ! It is term known to Shih Tzu breeders based on their hair coat. It is defined by a thinner, shorter coat that requires less grooming throughout their life. It is due to a recessive gene from breeding and can be common in a litter. It does not mean she is not full blooded. The coat can be a smoother compared to other shih tzus.
