My sensitive dog threw up after switching to new food. What now?

There is no need to transition slowly to prevent vomiting since he already vomits on the original diet. I would start a new diet with a different meat protein such as salmon, venison, rabbit, etc. I hope this helps! A sudden diet change can cause digestive upset, especially if the switch was sudden. In most cases, a gradual switch is needed to help the body adjust to the new food. It would be best to pick up any food for a few hours, and then offer a bland meal of boiled chicken and rice to help settle Jack's stomach, then return to his old food. Once his tummy has settled down, you can then start transitioning to the new food over a period of 7-9 days (I would recommend only adding in one new food at a time, instead of both a new wet and dry food, to minimize upset). You can add in 25% new food to the mix every 2-3 days as long as he seems to handle eating the mix. If he continues vomiting, worsens, or switching back to the old diet doesn't improve his symptoms, then it is best to seek veterinary care to rule out any other underlying issues or illnesses that may be the cause of his vomiting.

Unfortunately, it is quite common for some dogs to experience GI upset ([vomiting](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/vomiting-1/) or [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/)) when switching food. As long as Bo is behaving normally otherwise, you may be able to [manage her at home](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-things-you-can-do-at-home-if-your-pet-has-diarrhea). I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours. Resume feeding a bland diet (boiled boneless/skinless chicken breast mixed with plain cooked white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount as long as she doesn't vomit. Feed the bland diet until the stool is consistently normal (usually several days), then transition slowly to the new diet over another 5-7 days. [Veterinary probiotics](https://www.petcoach.co/article/probiotics-and-prebiotics-bacteria-aren-t-all-bad) may be considered to promote gut health. If she continues to vomit and have diarrhea, or develops lethargy, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain in spite of a bland diet, she will need to see a vet as soon as possible.

I would start by giving Kenzie 75% chicken and rice, and 25% new food. Feed that for a couple of days, then go to a 50/50 mixture. Again, feed that for a couple of days, and go to a 25/75 mixture. Feed for a couple of days, then go to 100% new food. I hope this helps.

I would start by initiating a bland diet and then feed this at least 3 days beyond the resolution of the vomit. Once it is resolved, I would transition back to the dog food. If the vomiting and decreased appetite begin again, I would do the bland diet and then transition to a completely different dog food altogether and see if this helps. If this does not help, then I would have the veterinarian examine Kuma so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! I'm sorry to hear that Sophie is intolerant to the foods you are trying. This may be a sign of a chronic underlying problem with her stomach like IBD, food allergies, or pancreatitis. You can try feeding a formulation of a bland diet like Hill's I/d or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal. You can also try a hypoallergenic diet or a novel protein diet. If the vomiting persists, she should be examined by a veterinarian to determine what the underlying problem may be.

If you can, go back to the other dog food. Dogs with very sensitive stomachs should be transitioned to new foods (even new flavors of the same food!) over 4 weeks. If the upset stomach continues for longer than 24-48 hours, Captain Hook should get checked out by the vet for medications to help with his symptoms.
