Why is my senior shih tzu lethargic and trembling when lifted?

It sounds like she is in pain. She could have a problem with her neck or back causing the pain. Since she is otherwise acting normal, it might not be an emergency but taking her to the emergency clinic tonight would give her some relief and make her feel a lot better. She may need an anti-inflammatory, pain medications, and a muscle relaxer. Hope she feels better soon!

Hi, she is so beautiful and does not look her age at all. I wonder if she is feeling a bit anxious as she seems to settle when wrapped up. Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain which can be excruciatingly painful. It causes dogs to shake, pant, and not want to move. Most will hesitate to jump on furniture or be reluctant to do stairs. If this is the case, x-rays can be taken of the spine. Based on these results, medications are prescribed. In the meantime, keep her quiet and carry her if possible. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Poor Puppy. She could have pain in stomach, back, hips, or neck. She sounds pretty painful, and unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give her. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd take her into a vet today.

Old age isn't a disease, so I would be concerned that Turner's lethargy and anorexia is caused by a medical problem. The problem is that these symptoms can be caused by many things such as heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, and cancer to name a few. Keep an eye on him tonight, and if he's still this way in the morning, take him into the vet. Try to tempt him to eat with some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice.
