My senior dog won't eat his food after illness. How to transition?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 8 months old | 105 lbs

10 yr old Dane/Mastiff acting tired & withdrawn, not eating his normal food - some diarrhea, some vomiting - gave him boiled chicken & rice - he ate that - but won't eat his normal food he's been eating for years - no vomiting in 3 days, no diarrhea in 5 days - not sure what to feed him as i don't think i can feed him boiled chicken & rice every day forever - behavior is better now

Hello. I would just slowly try to re-introduce Jagger's food by adding just a little more of his food to the chicken & rice at each feeding. Soaking his food in low sodium chicken broth may help too. Just mix it up well & maybe let it sit for 15-20 minutes to meld the smells & flavors before feeding. If his food is usually a dry kibble, switching to a canned or soft moist food might make him happy. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
