My senior dog is having multiple seizures. Do I need an emergency vet?

12 seizures within 20 hours is a large number of seizures. Also the length of the seizures at 5 to 9 minutes is extreme. This does certainly point to a serious problem in the brain and likely to a tumor. Make sure to take your dog to the vet on Monday to adjust the dosage/add other medications. If the seizures last longer than 5 minutes , use the diazepam your vet gave you and if the seizure does not stop with the diazepam, you need to take Murray to an out of hours vet or ER right away.

She needs an exam and blood work. I worry they are focal seizures. Common causes of focal seizures in a geriatric Golden are: low blood sugar from a tumor, metabolic conditions like liver or kidney failure or a brain tumor. I wish Skittle the best!

She really does need some investigation into what is going on. If toxins can be ruled out and there hasn't been a traumatic injury to the head it is most likely going to be a central nervous system lesion. Unfortunately this is normally a brain tumour or similar. Epilepsy is still a possibility but rarely occurs in older dogs. I would recommend seeing your vet as soon as possible so they can start with some blood tests and take their investigations from there. Fingers crossed for you.

I would contact the veterinarian again and ask if they can provide you with a sedative / anti-anxiety medication prior to coming in and then have you muzzle her prior to bringing her in. Medications such as Trazodone and amitriptyline together can help with the anxiety. She really needs to be seen by a veterinarian and have her blood tested to see if there are any abnormal systemic changes that could be causing the symptoms you are describing. With her age, I am concerned about something systemic that could be abnormal or cancer. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. This may be due to toxin ingestion or epilepsy, which does occur occasionally in older dogs. Head shaking may be related or unrelated as an ear infection. I recommend having Sami seen by her vet who can perform bloodwork and x-rays and prescribe anticonvulsant medications if the seizures continue. I recommend bringing a video of the episode if you are able to, as his will be really helpful in determining if the episode was truly a seizure. I would be concerning that Hershey is sick. When I hear of an old dog having a seizure, unfortunately my first thought is that it may be related to cancer, such as a brain tumor. She could also be suffering from diabetes or liver failure causing the seizure. Seizures are not normal in dogs, even when they are old (old age is not a disease). She should see a vet first thing in the morning for physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis. If your dog seizures again before you can seek vet care: - Don't put your hands near her mouth - Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the pads of the feet for cooling - Monitor Hershey at all times during the seizure to ensure that she cannot hurt herself by crashing into furniture, etc - If the seizure continues for more than 5 minutes, seek emergency care immediately

Poor Dex. Any seizure should be checked out by a vet, as they are not normal. I would get him an appointment to get this checked out as soon as you can.
