My senior Pit Bull has thyroid issues. What food should she eat?

Do not feed table scraps or human foods. Do not feed grain free foods as those can cause heart disease. Royal Canin, Hills Scoence Doet and Ians are all good brands to feed.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If you have been having difficulty in getting his weight down, it certainly could be from a disease such as hypothyroidism. If you have not had a veterinarian examine him and test his thyroid level, I would suggest doing so to rule this out as a cause. If his thyroid level is normal then you may want to enquire about Hills Metabolic Diet. The vet would need to provide you with a prescription for this food as well. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach! The food I mostly recommend is Science Diet. I have used their food for over 20 years in my own pets and have never had a problem with their food. My own dog was on their food for 20 years and did very well. He maintained an excellent body condition, hair coat was amazing and he loved very long. I contribute his longevity to a good diet and good care as well. If you are opposed to Science Diet, I also recommend Royal Canin, Natural Balance and Purina One. There are so many foods out there and it is easy to get caught up in the marketing game of "natural", "organic" and "grain free". As long as your dog is on a well balanced and complete diet is what matters the most. I typically recommend feeding a puppy food for the first 12 months and then switching to an adult food from 12 months to 7 years of age. Beyond 7 years I recommend a senior formula. She can eat just about anything she likes being hyperthyroid, as there are no specific diet recommendations for hyperthyroidism. As long as she continues her medication daily, then she can be on any senior diet food. that she likes. Some recommend high quality brands are Hill's Science Diet, Royal Canin, Eukanuba or Evo. Look at the packages for information on the calories. You will want one with higher calories. Try to stick to the better quality foods. Iams, Purina One, Eukanuba and Nutro are all moderately priced and are good diets. Ask about a membership or purchase punch card which some pet stores may have to help save costs. Yes, some active disease processes can skew some of these results. We should never diagnose a dog as hypothyroid if there is another concurrent issue being treated. You can add an egg or two to Duke's normal dog food every day, but I wouldn't start adding a bunch of other things until we know if the anemia resolves itself.
