Best diet for senior dog with anemia, low protein, and low thyroid?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 14 years and 8 months old | 51 lbs

I have a 15yr old Siberian Husky (current weight is 51lbs) his recent bloodwork showed a mild case of non regenerative anemia, as well as slightly low protein and slightly low thyroid. Is there any specific diet that I should change him over to (ie high protein or iron rich foods...beef liver, eggs, salmon etc)? Also, He is currently being treated with a broadspectrum abx due to a UTI and upper respiratory issues...could this be the cause of these blood values?

Yes, some active disease processes can skew some of these results. We should never diagnose a dog as hypothyroid if there is another concurrent issue being treated. You can add an egg or two to Duke's normal dog food every day, but I wouldn't start adding a bunch of other things until we know if the anemia resolves itself.
