My senior dog has a sudden, large lump on her neck. Should I worry?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | unspayed | 15 years and 4 months old

Hi I have a 15 year old jack Russell who is blind but getting about eating & drinking, over night a lump has appeared on top of her neck like a small tangerine size. She doesn't seem to be in pain but does slightly flinch if I stroke her neck. Should I be very worried? Many thanks

A lump that large that shows up quickly is concerning to me. It could be related to infection, a hematoma, or cancerous so I'd recommend getting Rosie examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Your veterinarian can take a small needle sample of the lump to decide if it's something that requires treatment or surgical removal.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I'm hoping for the best possible outcome for Rosie!
