My senior dog is self-pleasuring. Is this normal? How do I handle it?

It sounds like he may be humping you. Dogs do his as a sign of dominance and not always as a sexual thing. This could be just a personality change as he has gotten older or an anxiety thing of anything has hanged in the house (different people, different pets, different schedules, construction in or around the house, etc). If it continues, you could try a calming collar like adaptil. Also, you can tell him “no” and walk away when he does it to help him understand this isn’t ok. I hope this helps!

Oliver is masturbating, which is a normal behavior in dogs. Even though he's neutered, he's likely continuing the behavior because he has learned that it feels good. If this behavior bothers you, I recommend trying to distract him from doing it. It's best to get his attention before he starts masturbating. If you see him starting to act like he is going to masturbate, throw him a toy, start playing with him, or ask him to perform an obedience skill (i.e. sit, stay, etc.).

Unneutered dogs can masturbate and ejaculate. This is a normal behavior, and if you don't want this to continue, I recommend having him neutered as soon as possible. He may continue masturbating, especially if he's learned it feels good, but it will stop him from ejaculating.

Unneutered male dogs will masturbate and have discharge from the penis on occasion. This is normal as long as his penis does not stay exposed from it's sheath for longer than an hour or so. If it stays out too long it is an emergency and he needs to see a vet. If you do not like this behavior you can have him neutered which will probably help.

It sounds like Saxon is masturbating. Even though he is neutered, he still may be prone to doing it because it feels good. It's normal behavior, but if you don't want him to do this in the middle of the night, keep him from sleeping in your room. Best of luck.

I wouldn't be alarmed by this as it is likely a behavioral problem. Mounting, thrusting and / or masturbation in dogs is a normal behavior. However, excessive amounts of this can be problematic and may need to be addressed by a behaviorist. An occasional episode of humping should not be a cause for concern and neutering does not always fix this 100% of the time. Congrats on your new dog! First off, I wanted to say that I love you adopted a senior dog. They have so much to offer a family. Humping can be a common problem in dogs, as they learn that masturbating feels good. When Pat starts doing it, immediately remove him from your legs, and turn your back on him. Ignore him for a couple of minutes, and then return your attention to him. If he tries the behavior again, repeat ignoring him. If he behaves appropriately, praise him and give him love and treats. It's important to show him that when he does inappropriate behaviors, he will be ignored, but he will be rewarded when he shows appropriate behaviors.
