Why did my senior dog roll on her side with tongue out and sad eyes?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 17 lbs

While i was at work my mom was watching my 11 year old chihuahua/mix when she said my dog began rolling on her left side with her toungue out and said her eyes seemed sad. This lasted about a minute and she then went back to normal. I have already made a vet appt but wanted to know what it could be because i am terrified.

It is possible that it was a seizure, or it may have been what we call a syncopal episode. A syncopal episode occurs when there is a sudden decrease in blood flow to the brain, often due to an abnormal heart rhythm or other heart condition. Its also possible that was neither---if she remained conscious (was responsive and aware of her surroundings), it could just be that she had a itch or uncomfortable spot on that side she was trying to get to. As long as she's been acting normal since, its fine to just keep a close eye on her and get her to your vet for the appointment. Your vet may recommend running some lab work (probably some blood tests) to see if there are any abnormalities. Ask yourself and your mom if there is any possibilities of toxin exposures your dog could have gotten into, and be sure to let your vet know.

    I would certainly recommend having her get a checkup and possible bloodwork. 2 episodes like this are concerning. If a seizure she will not respond to her name being called during an episode and may seem disoriented afterwards. It's also possible the was having a syncopal episode or sone other cardiac event. Try to log anything abnormal and how long it lasted if anything triggered it, this may help your vet differentiate what is going on.

    Yes, I agree with you, it sounds like seizure behavior however it could also be syncopal episodes (fainting linked with heart disease). I recommend for her to have a vet exam with some bloodwork to start with. Depending on what is found on the exam and bloodwork your vet could possibly prescribe some effective treatment.

    There is very effective anti-seizure medication as well as effective heart medications. So, if it is one of these two disease processes she may be able to get treatment.

This may be due to toxin ingestion or epilepsy, which does occur occasionally in older dogs. Head shaking may be related or unrelated as an ear infection. I recommend having Sami seen by her vet who can perform bloodwork and x-rays and prescribe anticonvulsant medications if the seizures continue. I recommend bringing a video of the episode if you are able to, as his will be really helpful in determining if the episode was truly a seizure. These signs could be compatible with a seizure episode, possibly caused by epilepsy. Causes of epilepsy are several but can be summarized in intracranial (idiopathic neoplastic, inflammatory) and extracranial (metabolic, toxic, and many others) causes of it. The two big rule outs here would be seizure activity or syncope (like a fainting spell) that could be due to an underlying heart condition. I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam as soon as possible.

Why did my senior dog suddenly collapse, poop, then snap out of it?
Sounds like he may have lost his footing and then knocked himself cold (similar to when athletes get the wind knocked out of them after being hit) . Or he may have even had a brief episode of syncope (brief passing out episode due to an underlying heart condition). A silent seizure is also a possibility here. I would monitor him for now if he seems to have fully recovered and record any future events so that you can show your vet and get clarification on what may have caused this. I hope that Brownie continues to recover and do well. Best case scenario is that he got the wind knocked out of him, which in turn scared him. Best wishes moving forward! Take care.

My senior dog's eyes roll back sometimes. Is this normal or serious?
This is quite strange. Without more information, it is difficult to give you a great answer. If he is non-responsive when his eyes roll back, this could be a seizure or seizure like activity. If he is just doing it while he sleeps, this could be normal and I wouldn't be concerned. If this is new behavior, I would have your vet take a look at him. If you are able to get it on video, this may help your vet in figuring out what is wrong with him. I hope this helps!

Poor Chloe! It sounds like she had a seizure or possibly a syncope (fainting) from a heart problem. She should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can do an examination, run lab-work, and x-rays, if needed, to diagnose and then determine if any treatment is needed. If another episode happens, try to record so your vet can see exactly what happens during an episode.

What you are describing sounds like it may be seizure. This can happen at any age from getting into something or having a change in their nervous system or brain. At her age, it is safest to have her checked by a vet to make sure there are metabolic reasons this was started. If it is a seizure then there is medicine they can start to help prevent further ones and control it
