My senior dog is peeing, not eating, and restless after surgery.

It sounds like Mocha is definitely experiencing a pretty good deal of discomfort. There could be multiple problems occurring here or one greater issue. The type of urinary issue you are describing sounds like incontinence. This is not uncommon in older spayed female dogs. If this is the primary issue, it is generally treatable with medication. Pain that Mocha is experiencing, whether or not attributed to arthritis or something else, can be treated medically as well with anti inflammatory drugs and pain management. You might want to consider some diagnostics to assess the areas that are in most pain to make sure there is not another underlying condition besides arthritis that is causing the (out of the ordinary) pain. The most troubling part of all of what you've described is the not eating or drinking. This taken into account with the other clinical signs make me lean towards something more serious, such as an infectious process, inflammatory disease, or even a cancerous process. I would definitely say to get Mocha to the vet sometime soon to be assessed. Diagnostic blood work and imaging are definitely recommended to get down to the cause of the problems. Hope this helps!

It sounds like Lucy is in pain, poor girl! Yelping, lack of appetite, and decreased movement are all signs of pain in dogs. It's very possible she sprained or strained something, like her back or a limb, and this is her way of telling you. I'm glad the Cosequin seemed to help her, but in general, Cosequin is not a pain reliever; it's a joint supplement that provides nutritive support to cartilage, joint capsules, and joint fluid, and it's an excellent product, so I do recommend you keep Lucy on this consistently. However, I think she needs some more aggressive pain management and a check-up with your vet to make sure she hasn't seriously injured herself. Especially if her back is painful, as that can sometimes involve pinched nerves. If she has a history of bladder stones and is having inappropriate urination, that definitely needs to be evaluated as well. When you go in to have her pain assessed, bring a urine sample with you for your vet to check. It may be something as simple as a urinary tract infection or it could be a recurrence of bladder stones, but it's worth getting checked out. Good luck and I hope Lucy feels better soon!

Ruby is likely very much in mourning over the loss of her companion dog. She may be in a lot of pain with arthritis (not using her back legs), and she may also have a neurological condition called cauda equina, which affects the nerves regulating tail movement , urination and defecation and sometimes movement of the hind legs. I suggest you have her examined by your vet and have a discussion with him about the prognosis of this getting better and her quality of life. 15 years is a huge age for a Rotti and she just might be close to the end of her natural life span.

I am so sorry to hear that Ruby is experiencing this issue and I am sure it is upsetting for you both. I would suggest trying a bland but appetising diet such as boiled boneless chicken breast with steamed white rice. This diet is bland and easily digestible, while also hopefully enticing Ruby to eat with chicken. Provide plenty of fresh water as well. If Ruby doesn't anything in the next 24 hours, becomes lethargic, depressed, collapses, vomits or has diarrhoea profusely, or you notice any blood, then I advise taking her in to see her vet. The diarrhea can be due to stress, pain, or the antibiotics. All in all I would say that if she is eating and becoming more active, I would not panic yet. Give it a few more days. Hi, and thanks for your question. This is a quite generic but concerning presentation. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours. The incision looks normal. Her behavior is not. I recommend a recheck exam. She could be painful or could have a urinary infection. If the doxycycline is causing a stomach upset they may be able to switch antibiotics. They can put her on pain medication also to make her more comfortable. I recommend feeding wet food with added water in it so she doesn't get dehydrated. Again most dogs are back to normal in a day or two after the surgery so please bring her in for a recheck to make sure there is no complication.
