Why is my senior dog peeing, in pain, has sores, and won't eat?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 12 years and 1 month old | 60 lbs

I have a 12 year old Brittney mix. The last 2 days she will just pee while laying down or sleeping. She then gets up and walks away. She has never had accidents in the house I have had her since she was 5 weeks and fully potty trained at 3 months. She is also having bad pain in her back legs she can't even jump into the car. She does have arthritis but doesn't usually flare up at this time. She also has alot of sores all over again this is new. She is barely eating and drinking.

It sounds like Mocha is definitely experiencing a pretty good deal of discomfort. There could be multiple problems occurring here or one greater issue. The type of urinary issue you are describing sounds like incontinence. This is not uncommon in older spayed female dogs. If this is the primary issue, it is generally treatable with medication. Pain that Mocha is experiencing, whether or not attributed to arthritis or something else, can be treated medically as well with anti inflammatory drugs and pain management. You might want to consider some diagnostics to assess the areas that are in most pain to make sure there is not another underlying condition besides arthritis that is causing the (out of the ordinary) pain. The most troubling part of all of what you've described is the not eating or drinking. This taken into account with the other clinical signs make me lean towards something more serious, such as an infectious process, inflammatory disease, or even a cancerous process. I would definitely say to get Mocha to the vet sometime soon to be assessed. Diagnostic blood work and imaging are definitely recommended to get down to the cause of the problems. Hope this helps!

It's very possible she sprained or strained something, like her back or a limb, and this is her way of telling you. However, I think she needs some more aggressive pain management and a check-up with your vet to make sure she hasn't seriously injured herself. Especially if her back is painful, as that can sometimes involve pinched nerves. If she has a history of bladder stones and is having inappropriate urination, that definitely needs to be evaluated as well. When you go in to have her pain assessed, bring a urine sample with you for your vet to check. It may be something as simple as a urinary tract infection or it could be a recurrence of bladder stones, but it's worth getting checked out. Good luck and I hope Lucy feels better soon!

Poor Moca! I'm sorry to hear she's having these issues! Bloody urine can indicate an infection, bladder stones, inflammation in the bladder or vagina, and unfortunately sometimes even cancer. Her skin sounds very uncomfortable and could be related to allergy, infection, yeast overgrowth, or a number of other issues. I'd recommend taking Moca to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Her conditions sound quite painful and it is likely she will need some testing and medication to treat. Without an examination it is impossible to say what the underlying issues are so an examination with a veterinarian will be needed to figure out a treatment plan for her. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Oreo. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian soon. It sounds like she is experiencing multiple issues. If she is painful, she will experience difficulty with her mobility. This can also affect her appetite. The veterinarian will examine her and determine the source of her mobility issues. Laboratory work may be recommended to determine if there is another cause of her decreased appetite and if she is healthy enough for pain medications. In the meantime, carry her as much as possible. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

These signs are usually related either to urinary tract infection, or to kidney problem (failure) or to urinary incontinence. A blood test and urine analysis can rule out kidney failure and urinary tract infection. Urinary incontinence usually derived from a weak urinary sphincter (quite common in old age females). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. I would have Molly seen by a vet as soon as possible. It sounds like she has a few things going on at the moment that need to be diagnosed and treated medically . The problems using her back legs could be due to arthritis, or problems with her hips, spine, and/or joints. Drinking a lot more and peeing a lot more can be due to diabetes or kidney disease. That would also cause weight loss. The bad breath could be caused by diabetes and dental disease. Finally, peeing her in sleep could be caused by incontinence. She needs a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis to diagnose what is causing all of her symptoms. Once a cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment options with you.

Why is my senior dog struggling to walk, drinking more, and withdrawn?

It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Sausage evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sausage feel better. In the meantime, reduce his activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Good luck and have a good day!

My senior dog is peeing, not eating, and restless after surgery.

Hello. I wonder if Ruby is showing some signs for arthritis & is is pain. This would certainly cause her to be restless. Did your vet just check a voided urine sample, or was a sterile one sampled? This might give more information. We can also see urinary incontinence in spayed female dogs. Often this will respond to medications like Proin & Incurin. If she continues to not act well, the next step might be some x-rays or an ultrasound exam to see if there is something ongoing that was not apparent on the blood work.
