My senior dog has dry, flaky, pimple-like skin bumps. What can I do?

Hello. While I cannot diagnose your pet, it does appear that we have a case of bacterial seborrhea here. There may be an undiagnosed underlying cause, such as hypothyroidism or he has developed an allergic response/sensitivity to something, so I would make an appointment to see your vet as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can bathe your pet in a medicated antibacterial shampoo if you can find one. One that contains chlorhexidine ( 2-4% ) or benzoyl peroxide should work well. You can bathe your pet 2-3 times a week. I would also start an Omega-3 fatty acid supplement such as Bayer's Freeform snip tips. The bald spots and pimples may indicate minor infection or may be a symptom of a broader underlying condition. Skin problems can have a variety of causes, sometimes more than one. It is important to have the condition addressed by your veterinarian to determine if there is a medical cause for your pet’s skin issues and treat accordingly. Young dogs can get skin infections, commonly referred to as 'puppy pyoderma'. This usually occurs on the belly and inside the hind legs. This type of infection usually resolves without treatment as the puppy gets older. Finding out the cause and eliminating it is the best course of action. I would guess that these are sebaceous adenomas or benign skin growths that are common in older dogs. There are some other skin tumors that could look similar however and it would be best to have your veterinarian examine Linguine in person to be 100% sure.

Based on your description, this sounds like a bacterial skin infection called pyoderma, usually caused by a normal skin resident. Pyoderma is caused by lots of things including external parasites (fleas, ticks, mites), allergies, contact irritants, etc. The best thing to do is have Jr evaluated by your veterinarian. They can evaluate Jr. and then make recommendations for tests if they are needed. Lots of times we can evaluate these kind of problems and just prescribe some treatment. If this problem keeps recurring, then at that point your vet will advise some tests to try to figure out what is causing the problem. Good luck with Jr. I hope he gets better soon.

I would encourage you to check in with your veterinarian to check for this possibility so that therapy can be used accordingly. This can be caused by a localized skin infection, an infestation with mites or fleas, or even an allergic reaction. It is likely that these conditions may be causing Hump to be itchy, and she may be having these scabs from scratching. A vet can perform some tests including blood work, and taking some samples from Hump's skin to figure out what is going on and prescribe an appropriate treatment plan. I hope this helps!

Yes, at this point, Cosmo should take a trip to the vet. From the pictures, his skin lesions are highly suspicious for a bacterial skin infection. This may have occurred as a result of matted hair or underlying allergies. If he did well on Dinovet in the past, it may be worth restarting this supplement (double check with your vet first!), but I doubt that this alone will be sufficient to manage these lesions. I hope that he's on the mend soon!
