Why is my senior German Shepherd peeing blood with hip dysplasia?

This X-ray shows she has poor hip conformation or hip dysplasia and hip arthritis. Unfortunately this is a common orthopedic problem in German Shepard dogs and othe large breeds. Most dogs respond well to weight loss if needed and dog arthritis medication prescribed by your veterinarian. By keeping her active and moving she will maintain her muscle mass which will support her hips so there is less bone rubbing, which will result in less pain. Giving joint supplements like Dasuquin or Cosequin can help in addition to Omega 3 or fish oil which will reduce some of the inflammation. Physical therapy with a rehab veterinarian is effective in maintaining her muscles and help reduce the limping. These signs are very likely to be caused by a urinary tract infection. Genital tract infection needs to be considered though and possible uterine infection (even if unlikely) would ideally need to be ruled out. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infection and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it but urinary stones could be present as well. I would recommend to discuss with your veterinarian the possibility to perform an abdominal ultrasound to rule out presence of urinary stones and genital tract infection.

I am sorry Reese is not feeling good. I am not 100% sure about Reese's age but I would be concerned about a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, prostate issues or even trauma. I would highly recommend taking Reese to a vet for a good exam and possible urine test or x-rays. That way you can determine what the cause of the blood is and start proper treatment. hope that helps

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It becomes concerning when an older dog develops blood urine that is non-responsive to antibiotics. Having blood in the urine with out bacteria can mean a bladder stone or a bladder tumor. Tests I would consider next would be a urine culture, one belly X-ray to look for a bladder stone and full blood work. If the culture is negative and the X-ray doesn't show a stone then I would worry about a bladder tumor. An ultrasound of her bladder would help diagnose if she has a bladder tumor. Another option before doing more testing is to try a more powerful antibiotic for 3 weeks. But if the blood is still present with out the presence of bacteria then I would go forward. Diarrhea with blood can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. Blood in the stool makes it a more serious condition and does warrant an evaluation. I recommend that you have Karma evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. It sounds like Damian may have cauda equina syndrome. It could be arthritis in the hips but I think cauda equina is more likely. This is an extremely common problem in German Shepherds. With the symptoms you are describing, I would suspect a urinary tract infection or something causing irritation in the urinary tract such as bladder stones or crystals.
