Why does my older German Shepherd have bloody stools with clots?

Hi Angim! Yes, you are correct about the mucus you are seeing, it can be normal but not if there is blood in it. It could be Scout has intestinal worms, a GI illness, or may have eaten something rotten causing the blood. This should be checked out by a vet, and I would take him into one today.

Blood in faeces can be due to many disorders. It can be due to inflammation due to eating something off, ranging all the way to more serious issues such as tumours of the gut. Due to the many possibilities it is imperative to have the dog examined by a vet. This is the quickest and most reliable way to get to the bottom of what is going on. Hopefully it will be something fairly straightforward.

This can be from a mass in the rectum, irritation from pushing out hard stool, or she may have an anal infection causing the bleeding. If this continues I recommend a veterinary exam. They will check the anal sacs and palpate inside the rectum for a mass. Make sure the stool isn’t too firm. Adding fiber to the diet will bulk up the stool and make it easier to pass. Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that Nelson isn't feeling well. Unfortunately, I do not see any pictures attached, so I cannot comment on the appearance of Nelson's stool. However, it is very concerning that he has had black and bloody stool. This could be a result of gastrointestinal ulceration, parvovirus, a severe burden of intestinal parasites (hookworms in particular), or exposure to some types of rat poison. It is possible that he could have sticks in his stool if he had ingested some, or it could be intestinal worms. At this point, I strongly recommend taking Nelson to his vet for a physical exam and fecal flotation test to check for the presence of parasites. From there, his vet will be able to determine the best course of treatment. Left untreated, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract can be quite severe, particularly in young puppies. This may be due to hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, a coagulation issue meaning that she is not coagulating her blood well enough which is concerning, among many other reasons. I highly recommend that you consider having her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat her accordingly. She could quickly become anemic which is why this is important and needs to be taken care of now. The blood from Sherry's anus, is that from his stool or is there a problem with his anal tissue? German Shepherds can suffer from perineal fistulas which are very painful. Blood in the stool is common in dogs suffering from stomach upset due to inflammation within the colon. If you are able, clean his anus and take a picture if you think it looks abnormal and I can try to help you better. I would fast Sherry for 12-24 hours to rest his GI tract. Then start feeding a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals. Feed this diet until he passes 2 normal stools then transition him back to his normal dog food. If the stool doesn't improve, he won't eat, or starts vomiting he needs an exam by a Vet. I hope this helps and feel free to post a picture of his anus if it looks abnormal. I am so sorry to hear that your pet Bambi experiencing some severe signs of colitis. It sounds like your poop pup has maybe contracted parvovirus. If your vet has not already tested for this then they should. If she does have parvovirus, then this would explain why her symptoms are so severe and why she hasn't recovered as easily. In fact, parvovirus pets have about an 80% survival rate if treated in the hospital, and less than 60% survival rate if treated at home.
