Why does my senior dog pee after drinking? How long can they hold it?

It is possible that, at the age of 13, she has severe arthritis pain and squatting to urinate hurts. This may be the reason why she holds it in until she can't hold it in anymore. I suggest you have her hips checked for arthritis, and your vet may prescribe her some NSAIDs to alleviate her pain.

At her age there are several things it can be. Your vet can collect a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection. They can always draw some blood to check her kidneys and blood sugar and for Cushings disease. All these can cause an increase in drinking and urination which will lead to accidents. If all of that is normal, than she may be getting incontinent and they have medication for that also!

Hello. No this is not normal. The very first thing you need to do is have Pepper evaluated by your veterinarian. Extremely thirsty dogs will drink urine, & this can happen in chronic renal failure & diabetes. I hope you can have him seen soon. Thank you.

That is a bit of time to go without peeing, but it's good Sugar is going at least once a day and isn't going frequently from the UTI. It's also good that she is drinking water. I wouldn't be too worried.

Look how cute Tandy is! Yes, 13 hours is too long to expect her to hold her bladder, she shouldn't be expected to hold it longer than eight hours at most. I'd see if there is someone you can hire to come over to let her out once during the night, or if you can swing home to do it. I hope this helps!

I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further diagnostics would include abdominal imaging and lab work. Hello. Jack Jack should definitely not be urinating every 30 minutes. This could be a physical problem, or he has some kind of psychological issue, especially if he is drinking more than a normal amount of water. I think it would be a good idea to see if his kidneys are OK & that he does not have any other issues with holding his urine. At the very least, he should be able to hold his urine a minimum of 4-6 hours at this age. Hopefully, he will be fine & he will outgrow this behavior, but I would recommend making sure there is not a medical reason for such frequent outings.
