Assuming Kara is in good health otherwise - which should be established with blood work and x-rays of the chest, to ensure that the tumor hasn't metastasized - then I would recommend proceeding with surgery. Mammary tumors can be quite invasive and aggressive, but depending on the grade surgery can be curative. Just because a dog is old, it doesn't necessarily mean they can't have anesthesia - you just have to take precautions, and find a vet who is capable of taking special care. I would also get a definitive diagnosis as to what the mass is before making any decisions, There are lots of benign lumps that grow all over dogs' bodies, and just because this one is in the mammary area, it isn't necessarily an aggressive cancer. A fine needle aspiration biopsy can usually tell you what these are.

I am so sorry, but there is nothing you can do at home for this, other than try to keep it clean if it breaks open and bleeds (which it looks like it could do at any time). Short of taking her in, there really just aren’t any options... this would require surgical removal. I'm so sorry that Brownie has cancer! Depending on where her lump is, it can cause pain as she places pressure on it. If there is any bleeding or discharge from her lump, that can be painful as well. The tumor has become very ulcerated and necrotic. It needs to be removed, likely by a specialist. In the meantime, she should wear a cone to prevent licking and a t-shirt to prevent it from rubbing on the ground. She may need antibiotics to treat any underlying infection and pain medication. I would have her assessed by a veterinarian asap.

I am afraid there is really nothing that you can do for her other than giving her a lot of TLC and watching the tumor. Should it open up and ulcerate it will cause infection and that may be the time to say good bye. If you think she may be in pain, you can ask your vet for some pain medicine for her. I am so sorry, but 15 years is a grand old age and you took good care of her.

As she is unspayed it's very likely a primary tumor of the mammary gland, it's not possible to know if it has already sent metastases to other places in the body though. the recommendation is to get it removed surgically ASAP.

While most mammary rumors are benign adenomas some can be more malignant carcinomas. Even the benign tumors should be removed since they tend to grow over time and can cause inflammation of the mammary gland. If your vet feels Shadow is not a good candidate for anesthesia you could always ask about referral to a speciality hospital that may be better equipped for higher risk pets. If surgery is completely out of the question and you’re interested in comfort care you and your vet could simply monitor Shadow for signs of pain or inflammation. Mammary carcinomas tend to spread to the lungs so you should also watch to see if her cough worsens or if she is having trouble breathing.
