My dog has an ulcerated mammary tumor. What should I do next?

An ulcer in a tumor happens when the tumor grows so aggressively , that it is taking away space from itself to grow and then the cells squish each other to death and an ulcer occurs. This is also the reason why this will not heal by itself. Only debulking (taking as much of the tumor away surgically) or taking the whole tumor would help here. The antibiotics are given to prevent infection or fight infection of the ulcer. tumor ulcers usually are not very painful, if painful at all.

This definitely cannot wait until the 23rd but she could probably wait until the 16th if your vet is doing the surgery that day. until then it's mainly a case of keeping the ulcerated tumor clean as much as possible, if necessary it is possible to bandage the area as well with special dressing. if it is bleeding profusely you will need to take her to an emergency center today.

Poor girl. Because this mass is open and seems to be bothering her I would highly consider having this mass removed surgically. Sometimes if the mass is small (less than 2 cm's) we can do a sedative on the pet and quickly remove these. However if it is a larger mass then general anesthesia may be required. She also needs to be placed on oral antibiotics to keep this area from getting infected and daily cleaning of the mass as well. Sterile saline flushes can help keep this area relatively clean and then an e-collar placed on her can help prevent licking. If surgery isn't an option for you, then medical management with antibiotics, e-collar and regular cleanings may allow proper healing of the area, but in most cases surgical removal is the best option. This is large and ulcerated as you said. Since it's on the elbow area that is difficult to bandage. You can put a long sleeve Tee shirt on Foster to keep the area protected from licking. I recommend cleaning it daily with a warm damp cloth and applying a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. Talk to your veterinarian about trying a course of antibiotics. They will reduce any infection which may help it dry up or make it less inflamed. This would be difficult to surgically remove at this point due to its size and location but getting a second opinion from a surgical specialist is what I would do if you want to consider surgical removal. It looks like that growth has ulcerated, meaning the skin has become too thin and weak because of growth of the mass and is starting to break in places. It needs to be removed surgically at this point. When it's removed, it can also be sampled to determine what sort of mass it is and if further treatment is needed. It could definitely be a fatty tumor still. It's also possible to get incorrect results from a fine need aspirate, so it could be something else. As she is unspayed it's very likely a primary tumor of the mammary gland, it's not possible to know if it has already sent metastases to other places in the body though. the recommendation is to get it removed surgically ASAP.

I recommend to take Greta to see her veterinarian. While most skin masses are benign, masses that a red/pink, hairless and raised are a concern for a malignant skin tumor called a Mast Cell tumor. It also appears as though this mass is ulcerated regardless and it needs to be removed. Once masses grow to the point of ulceration, they will heal and break open over and over again which can make them prone to infections not to mention oozing/bleeding. Just like with a human, the doctor will likely take a sample of the mass or remove the mass entirely and microscopically exam it. Thats the only way to know what it is accurately. In the mean time, protect the mass from trauma and wash it daily with an antibacterial hand soap (rinse it well). You can apply a small amount of coconut oil and rub it well into the skin.
