My senior dog has a stomach bump she's licking. Is it serious?

This appears to be a large mammary tumour or mastitis which with her other symptoms is very concerning. She must be assessed by a vet to determine the most appropriate treatment, both conditions can ve life threatening if not treated

That could be a growth, like a benign growth, and it's clearly bothering Leinie if she keeps licking at it. Put an Ecollar on her to stop licking at it. You can buy one at a pet store or make one at home. Then have her seen by a vet on Monday for this. The vet can diagnose what it is, and can treat as needed. Best of luck.

We cannot diagnose anything from a picture, it's impossible. I understand wanting to avoid a vet bill, but from this picture, it does not appear to be a traditionally lipoma. You have to have Angel seen by a vet for this, this growth does not look good. If she is licking at it, yes it's bothering her. What's best for her is to take her into a vet, and I would take her into one today or tomorrow.

Hello there from across the pond! Lumps and bumps on older dogs are fairly typical and are to be expected with an older pet. By and large, lumps and bumps that are round, smooth, and/or freely movable generally speaking are not causes for alarm. However, lumps and bumps that become red, inflamed, warm to the touch, itchy, have rough edges, are rapidly growing, or have discharge coming from them need to be looked at by a veterinarian and have them assessed. Regardless, I would recommend your veterinarian take a look at Chester and take small sample of the small mass he has and look at it under a microscope. From there, your vet can determine the nature of the mass and if it is concerning. You may also discuss surgical removal of the small mass if that is recommended by your vet. I hope this has helped!

This lump/growth should be ideally examined by your veterinarian to have a definitive diagnosis. Your vet will examine it and possibly perform with an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy. There is not a photo attached to the post and that may help to give better advice. There are many reasons why Sassy may be licking her stomach and it includes allergies to fleas, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the licking should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Sassy wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Renal disease can present like this but without bloodwork, it's difficult to know if renal disease is present or not. You are right that the bump could get infected. Again, you need a veterinarian for antibiotics. Unfortunately it is hard to tell what that lump is just by the picture. I would recommend you take her in to see your vet for an exam and potentially a fine needle aspirate of this lump. A fine needle aspirate is a way to try to exfoliate cells from the lump and look at them under the microscope to try to tell what this lump is. Even if it is a benign lump, she may need to have it removed if she continues to lick it. She also may need topical treatment or potentially antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatories if the lump is infected or causing her pain. I often recommend taking lumps off of legs sooner, as they are easier and generally less expensive to remove and close the skin when they are small. Large lumps on limbs can be quite difficult to remove, as there isn't much additional skin in this area to close over the wound.
