My older dog has stomach lumps he's nibbling. Should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Cairn Terrier | Male | neutered | 8 years and 4 months old | 16 lbs

I have an 8 year old cairn terrier and I have found 2 lumps on the side of his stomach, they are no bigger than a small thumb nail but he seems to be nibbling at one. Is this something to be concerned about? Thanks

Hello there from across the pond! Lumps and bumps on older dogs are fairly typical and are to be expected with an older pet. By and large, lumps and bumps that are round, smooth, and/or freely movable generally speaking are not causes for alarm. However, lumps and bumps that become red, inflamed, warm to the touch, itchy, have rough edges, are rapidly growing, or have discharge coming from them need to be looked at by a veterinarian and have them assessed. Regardless, I would recommend your veterinarian take a look at Chester and take small sample of the small mass he has and look at it under a microscope. From there, your vet can determine the nature of the mass and if it is concerning. You may also discuss surgical removal of the small mass if that is recommended by your vet. I hope this has helped!

Thank you for providing pictures, they are very helpful! I see what you mean about the scratch but it doesn't look infected so I would leave it be for now. As for the lump, I'm having trouble seeing it in the picture, but I do think it's worth getting checked out by a vet. Call his vet tomorrow to make him an appointment. I hope this helps!

It is difficult to determine if a lump is cause for concern by just an image alone anyway. Ideally, she should be physically examined by your veterinarian. If necessary, fine needle aspirates can be done to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. Treatment options can be discussed once results are returned. If the lumps are not bothering Maddie, you can choose to monitor for rapid change or growth, sensitivity, discharge or restriction of motion. IN these cases, she would need to see her vet.

My 9-year-old dog has a 1-inch lump on her belly. What should I do?

There are a couple of things this lump on Heidi could be such as a benign tumor, a cyst, or a malignant tumor. Unfortunately without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain what it is, so I recommend a vet visit. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would take her into the vet in the next couple of days to have this lump examined and diagnosed so it can be treated as need. As long as he is behaving normally otherwise, you can monitor the lumps at home. Older dogs are more prone to these growths. Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine which ones you should worry about without a physical exam and diagnostics. If necessary, your veterinarian can perform a fine needle aspirate in the clinic to collect samples for pathology. This could identify which lumps are of concern. My dog has a growing mass on his belly. When should I see a vet?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The end of the nodule seems to have an ulcerated appearance which concerns me. Definitely have your vet take a look at this. I would recommend removal & having the tissue sent for pathology for identification. It looks like a full excision should be curative. Hope this helps.
