Why is my senior dog lethargic, has diarrhea, and pees a lot?

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Female | spayed | 11 years and 8 months old | 30 lbs

My nearly 13 yr old cocker spaniel has had diarrhoea today, excessive urinating and is very lethargic.. have just found what at first I thought was a tick but now I'm not sure..

It sounds like Button is pretty sick. She is showing several different symptoms and could have a number of things going on. In older dogs like her I worry about things such as diabetes, a urinary tract infection, and cancer.

I would recommend taking her to your vet to be checked out as soon as possible. Your vet will most likely want to perform some lab work, possibly a urinalysis, and maybe even some x-rays.

Yes it would be best to have her seen. Decreased appetite and lethargy are very common symptoms of many diseases, many of which may be treatable. The best way to know what is going on (diagnosis), how serious it is, and how to help her feel better is to have her seen. Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The clinical symptoms you describe are concerning for something serious going on with Daisy. She could be acting like that from perhaps severe dehydration and hypovolemia (lack of volume in her circulatory system) from so much diarrhea and recent history of anorexia and not drinking water. She could have also being exposed to some toxin that is affecting both her gastrointestinal and neurologic systems. I highly recommend you take her to a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible. Good luck!

I would agree that Finnigan also sounds very sick. The excessive peeing and urination makes me concerned about diabetes. In addition to the urinalysis I would recommend running some blood work. This would rule out the diabetes and also check his liver and kidney values. It may also be beneficial to take X-rays if the abdomen as well since he isn't eating well.

Why is my senior dog losing weight, having diarrhea, and trouble walking?

Her symptoms could be due to any number of things: * intestinal parasites (worms) * endocrine disease (Cushings, thyroid, Addisons, etc) * liver, kidney or other organ failure/disease * cancer * etc...... Her symptoms sound serious and I think you need to have her examined by your veterinarian. Weeks of weight loss and diarrhea is not good. Even if the vet finds that it is just old age there are medications she can be given to help her walk better and be more comfortable.

My senior dog has diarrhea, is weak, and won't eat. What to do?

It sounds like she needs to be examined and treated by a vet right away. She may be getting dehydrated and need some fluids, either subcutaneously or intravenously. Your vet can also run some blood work and other tests to help determine the cause and evaluated the function of all her organs. It is very concerning that she is not eating and is very weak. I don't think this is something that should be treated at home with OTC medications. If she has a gum infection then she may need an antibiotic to treat the infection. Call your vet or take her to an emergency clinic for treatment. Hope she feels better soon!
