My senior dog with kidney disease has mouth ulcers. What helps?

Mouth ulcers can be cause by the pet putting something caustic in his mouth, trauma or even from some kind of medical condition (i.e. kidney disease). Bee needs to have his mouth fully examined and a complete history to help find out the potential cause here. In general, a mixed dog around this weight should be on an adult brand food and given about 1.5 cups daily. Some good brands to consider are: Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Eukanuba or Purina. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to know exactly what the sore is without seeing a photo. It can be trauma, a ruptured mass, or a severe infection. If the area is bleeding, has white or yellow discharge, or is causing your dog discomfort, he should be seen by a vet right away for treatment. In the meantime, you should try to keep the area as clean as possible and try to prevent your dog from licking the area with an E-collar or "cone". Kidney disease can cause a build up of toxins in the body, which can cause stomach ulcers and ulcers in the mouth, sores on the skin are not commonly associated with kidney disease. In the past in the UK we used to prescribe Antepsin syrup or tablets for gastric ulcers, in addition to analgesic medications (no antinflammatories !) and antiacids. It used to be a human medication so needed informed consent from the owners and compliance to the cascade (it could be used in cases where no other authorised animal medication was available). Unfortunately then there was a shortage in his availability and other medications had to be used on their own.. Antepsin, or sulcralfate, created a barrier between the ulcer and the acid content of the stomach. The antiacids now are still used, and their active drug is either omeprazole and/or ranitidine.

I am so sorry for the recent loss of your beloved pet. It is so difficult losing a pet that you clearly loved very dearly. With regard to Danny, without knowing his weight or seeing the wound it is difficult to say if this is the best antibiotic for him or if the dose is appropriate. The veterinarian who prescribed the medications will be better able to advise you in that regard. German Shepherd Dogs typically live for between 10 and 12 years, barring any severe health issues. But antibiotic therapy such as the one you are giving Danny now, will not extend his life span. Keeping your dog up to date on his vaccinations and taking him to the veterinarian every 6 to 12 months for wellness visits are the best way to ensure that Danny lives a full and healthy life.

If this is not the case, he could be reluctant to move due to joint, muscle or abdominal pain. Please make an appointment to have her seen by your vet for further evaluation and treatment, and see the link below for more information on dental care in pets. Kona needs to be examined by the veterinarian. Nonhealing wounds are concerning for cancer or an autoimmune condition. Sometimes the vet will recommend a biopsy right away to get a diagnosis. Sometimes the vet will try treating for infection to see if it responds to therapy. The first step is to have Kona examined. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
