My senior Labrador has DRA. Can diet or supplements help his eyes?

Yo may try to find one for purchase or construction. There is not a supplement that will help Oliver to regain his vision. If he has cataracts, there is an option for surgery (just so you know). It is important to feed a high quality senior dog food such as Royal Canin or Science Diet. If you are noticing a change in his body condition, I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian to have him checked for kidney or endocrine diseases which can change the body. The only treatment is the topical application of eye drops to lubricate the surface of the eyes. If the eyes are not responding, then drops to decrease the body's immune response may be required. I'm sorry that Pluto has cataracts! Unfortunately, there is no medication or eye drop that will do anything to help with this. The only effective treatment for cataracts is surgery to remove the affected lens, and replace it with an artificial lens - the same surgery that is done for humans with cataracts. If you're interested in this as a possibility for Pluto, I would recommend requesting referral to an ophthalmologist. He/she can give you a better idea of whether he would be good candidate for surgery or not, and can also discuss expected costs if you wish.

Unfortunately there is no treatment for cataracts other than cataract surgery to remove the diseased lens, and this costs thousands of dollars (around $7000 for both eyes). There are eye drops that you can try called Ocluvet, but there has been little research on these drops to suggest they actually "dissolve" the cataracts. Hello, so sorry you are going through this. I cannot make a decision for you on whether or not you should put her to sleep. That is completely up to you. It would be nice to find out what might be causing her symptoms before you jump to the conclusion that there may be no hope. She may have a treatable issue. I suggest you get her to your vet for an exam. Sometimes they can find things on exam that can help you make a decision. Some simple bloodwork may also be very helpful. The vet may be able to dispense some medications to make her feel better. I don't think you should give up until you get some type of diagnosis. What type of testing has been done? My concerns at am that age for red eyes with a discharge would be glaucoma and KCS with a secondary infection. Your vet can check the pressures for glaucoma. There is a test that can tell how many tears she produces in a minute and if it is too low then she has chronic dry eye or KCS. Often times there is a secodnary infection due to the chronic dry eye. Both glaucoma and KCS require life long management with eye drops to control symptoms and there is more than one medication to try as everyone responds differently. oral steriods or antibiotics may be needed initial to get it under control the fastest but generally are not needed long term

Supplements, such as Omega 3 fatty acids (Welactin is one example), can be beneficial to maintain skin health if Daisy has allergies. They are not a magic cure-all, but when used in conjunction with other management strategies for allergy triggers (diet changes, flea presentation, antihistamines, allergy immunotherapy injections, etc.), can be helpful in many dogs. There are no eye drops that will improve cataracts or age-related changes (lenticular sclerosis). Eye cloudiness can also be caused by glaucoma, corneal ulcers, among other inflammatory conditions. Consider having her eyes evaluated by a vet to determine the cause of the cloudiness so that it can be managed.
