Why is my senior dog coughing blood and sleeping a lot?

Any heart disease associated with blood clots may result in your dog coughing up blood. A heartworm infection increases the risk for pulmonary thormboembolism which may cause blood or bloody fluid to be pushed into the airways. Has he been tested for heartworm disease? Dogs with pancreatitis, some types of anemia, lung cancer, systemic bleeding, inflammatory diseases and hyperadrenocorticism will also be at an increased risk for pulmonary disorders which could cause this. Something is definitely causing him discomfort and pain. More advanced testing may be needed. Have you considered taking him to see a veterinary internal medicine specialist? Poor Bailey! Coughing up blood along with bleeding from the nose are quite serious, and I would take her into the vet now. This bleeding could be a sign of ulcers, an inability to clot blood, liver failure, respiratory disease, or cancer. Unfortunately, cancer is always a possibly in an old dog, and if she did have cancer that had spread to her lungs, it could cause these signs. I would take her into a vet right away. The vet can do routine blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and possibly blood clotting tests to see what is causing her to cough up blood and have nose bleeds. Once the cause is found, the vet can determine what, if any, treatment is appropriate for her.

This is a very real concern and you should have him assessed by a vet urgently. Infection, injury, heart and lung disease, parasites, clotting issues and foreign bodies could all be at play. A full physical and possibly chest xrays are recommended immediately

Poor Daisy Mae. This could be potentially serious like heart disease or pneumonia or even certain toxins. On the other hand this could be tracheal irritation due to a lot of coughing. I would take her to the vet as soon as possible to ensure that she is the okay. Your vet will be able to take X-rays and do bloodwork if needed. Other possible causes include severe gastroenteritis (gut infection), pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, or parasites. The vet will start by performing a thorough physical exam, looking for any bumps or sources of bleeding. They may recommend blood work or x-rays to further pinpoint the problem. At minimum, they can offer supportive treatments such as fluid therapy to combat dehydration from the diarrhea, stomach protectants and pain medications. The sooner that she can see the vet, the better. In the meantime, I would offer her small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and plain white rice, which should be easy to digest. Coughing in dogs can be caused by pneumonia. upper respiratory infections, heartworm disease, or heart conditions. Bloody diarrhea can be caused by inflammatory bowel disease, viral diseases such as parvovirus, toxin ingestion, or bacterial infections. Sometimes, severe parasitic infections can cause these signs. A vet can perform a physical exam, and will likely need some further diagnostics such as bloodwork and x-rays to determine next steps and treatment. I hope all is well with Iris!

These are alarming symptoms indeed. For an older dog with coughing and lethargy, my top suspicions would be: heart disease, heartworm disease (if he is not current on heartworm prevention) primary lung cancer, pneumonia or a heart based tumor. He is at risk for all of these based on his breed. I would highly recommend taking him in to your vet for bloodwork analysis and chest radiographs to properly diagnose him based on the many possible causes stated above. Poor guy. He sounds very unstable for now and the quicker you can get him in to a vet the better.
