My senior dog has a clear fluid-filled bump on his head. What is it?

This is likely a mass. Have it evaluated by your vet and tested to determine if this is something to be concerned about or not. Most of the time samples can be taken of any mass without any sedation needed. Typically non-firm masses are benign (non-cancerous); however it’s always best to have any mass that continues to grow, evaluated by your vet. I hope everything turns out ok for your pet Charlie. Thank you for providing pictures of Ela's bump. There are a couple of things this could be; for example, it could be from trauma if she's scratching her ear a lot. That could be a sign of an ear infection. This bump could also be a benign tumor or a malignant tumor. In a senior dog, unfortunately there is always a chance any bump could be malignant. Given that it's been growing, I would have her seen by a vet for it. The vet can diagnose what is causing the bump and how best to treat it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

This may be a little abscess, a cyst or a tumor (warts are benign tumors, btw.). You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Charlie! I would recommend a visit to the vet for an examination. This mass is ulcerated, which is more concerning than a subcutaneous mass. When we have a mass in this area I am also concerned it could actually be a sign of an infected tooth root which sometimes abscess to the skin in this area. Your vet can look the area over. If a tooth is suspected as the cause they may recommend an x-ray. Otherwise they may recommend cytology of the mass to determine the best treatment.

I am sorry that Aspen has developed a bump or lump on her skin. Thank you for providing pictures. From the pictures you have sent the "bump" appears to be a skin growth. There are several types off masses that can grow in the skin of dogs such as cysts, lipomas, and even cancers. Some are benign and some are malignant, so careful observation is important, as well as having a vet examine it if you are concerned. Since you only noticed the lump recently, I would continue to monitor it for growth, ulceration, changes in texture or color. Measure the mass with a ruler so you can compare its growth in a couple weeks time. Rapidly growing masses are more concerning. You can also try applying a cool compress and cleaning with warm salt water once daily if it needs it. If you notice any changes or rapid growth either take Aspen in for a vet appointment or post another question here on the forum. Hello. This is definitely a tumor, but it is impossible to say if it is a relatively harmless benign one, or a dangerous potentially aggressive malignant tumor. My guess is that this is very benign & will cause no great harm to Poochi. It can continue to grow, but may not ever affect her overall life. The best thing to do is to have your veterinarian perform a fine needle aspirate where a few cells are removed from the lump & examined under the microscope. Hopefully, all that will be seen are benign fat cells ( lipoma ), but if highly differentiated cells are seen, this would indicate that removal is advised. It is hard to tell without seeing it in person, but pimple like bumps often indicate an infection like a pyoderma. Sometimes medicated shampoo can be enough to get rid of the bumps, but other times they need oral antibiotics. I would recommend making sure he is on a good flea prevention and speaking with your vet about the possibility of a skin infection. I hope this helps!
