What's this red bump on my senior dog's head with hair loss?

Thank you for providing pictures of Ela's bump. There are a couple of things this could be; for example, it could be from trauma if she's scratching her ear a lot. That could be a sign of an ear infection. This bump could also be a benign tumor or a malignant tumor. In a senior dog, unfortunately there is always a chance any bump could be malignant. From the picture you have sent the lump appears to be a skin growth. There are several types off lumps or masses that can grow in the skin of dogs such as sebaceous cysts, warts, abscesses, lipomas, and several types of cancers. Some of these cancers are benign and some are malignant, so careful observation is important, as well as having a vet examine it if you are concerned. My first step of advice for you would be to use a ruler to measure the lump today. Then repeat that measurement every few weeks. Continue to monitor the lump for growth, ulceration, pain, bleeding, swelling, and changes in texture or color. Rapidly growing and changing masses are more concerning, and may be a sign of malignancy. Because this is a new mass and because you have already observed growth, I would suggest taking Brandi in to have the mass examined by her veterinarian. The veterinarian will most likely want to take a sample of the cells within the mass using a FNA (fine needle aspirate). Using cytological examination of those cells, the type of mass can be identified and a treatment plan created. That bump could be a skin mass, a wart, a skin tag or an infected hair follicle. Most skin masses are benign but there is always a chance its malignant. The best way to know would be to take Charlie into the vet to have the mass aspirated. This will tell you what it is. Otherwise you can monitor it closely at home. I think that’s a good idea to get it checked out. Anytime a mass changes, you should be concerned for cancer but hopefully it’s not that serious. Try to get her in as soon as you can. The doctor may need to aspirate that mass to get the diagnosis. If Katie will allow it, a cool (not cold) compress may also make it feel better.
