Are senior dog arthritis injections causing stomach problems?

Poor Diesel! The Metacam would be the more likely culprit for the upset stomach, as this is a common side effect with NSAIDs - but the omega-3 supplement could certainly be a possibility. I would suggest calling your veterinarian to let them know that Diesel has been having stomach issues on his meds. They may suggest trying him on a different NSAID such as Rimadyl or Galliprant, to see if he tolerates this better.

I have a pit bull myself with very bad arthritis so I know where you are coming from. I routinely prescribe Adequan to clients to inject at home, as they are very simple subcutaneous injections. This is me, not every veterinarian will be comfortable doing this but many are particularly after you tell them you are medical professionals. I would also like to suggest the following with respect to therapies. You may want to try switching to a different NSAID. Sometimes switching makes all the difference after a while. I would also consider adding amantadine to his therapy. I use all three you described plus amantadine for my boy. He is 14 and going strong. You can also try laser therapy, acupuncture, and therapeutic massage as more holistic techniques to help him out. Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Hello, yes you can very safely start using the Adequan for Stella's arthritis. I would very much prefer that you speak with Stella's vet before using the Prexicox. If you were my client, I would either recommend increasing the gabapentin ( if appropriate ) or using the newest NSAID called Galliprant. This newer medication is much gentler on the liver than anything we have ever had for managing arthritis in dogs. If this is not an option, then I would recommend using a liver neutraceutical like Denamarin to protect the liver as much as possible while on the Previcox. If the supplement is new then yes, it can cause some diarrhea. I would suggest lowering the dose and switching her to a bland diet. You can try to slowly increase the supplement. If her diarrhea continues try switching brands or contact your veterinarian.

Adequan and other injectable polysulfated glycosaminoglycans (the active ingredient of adequan) showed promising results when they were first tested for use in arthritic patients, but the most recent studies suggest that it's not very beneficial. I have actually stopped recommending it, because the I have not seen sufficient data to show that they are worth the money and need for a regular injection. Some people still swear by it and may recommend in cases where everything else has failed, so that may be the reason it was given to Abbey. Considering Abbey does not appear to be getting any benefit from the injections, I would definitely question your vet about the need for further injections and also about the potential need for other medications to help with the pain. I am sorry to hear about Quinn! I would definitely recommend bringing Quinn in to his vet for an exam and discussion. There are medications that can help with arthritis and make him more comfortable if he isn't on anything currently (including omega fatty acids, joint supplements, NSAIDs, and drugs like Gabapetin, as well as alternative treatments like acupuncture). Your vet may recommend increasing the fiber in Quinn's diet by changing diets to something higher in fiber or adding fiber (such as canned pumpkin or psyllium) to the diet which can bulk up the feces and make it easier to poop and less likely to fall out. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do for your other dog in preparation. If Demon does have anxiety after Quinn is gone, there are some non-drug options for this such as an Adaptil (pheremone) collar or diffuser, or a calming supplement like Composure or Solliquin.

If Max has been on antiinflammatories for a while now, I would recommend having his blood tested annually to make sure the medications are not causing damage to the liver or kidneys. With max being the age he is I would recommend annual blood work anyway even if he was not on medication so that any changes can be detected early. Switching to a bland diet for sensitive stomachs may also help. Purina has a probiotics called Fortiflora which may aid in digestion so I would also consider adding this in with his food.
