Why is my arthritic dog's stomach upset from Metacam or omega-3?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 10 years and 2 months old

My 10 year old dog was diagnosed with possible arthritis of the hips (his lower back possibly as well because its stiff). He is having x-rays after lockdown. He was put on metacam (in his morning food) and we put him on omega-3 as well. He has had an upset stomach since, any ideas? We might try a week off the omega-3 to see if it changes.

Poor Diesel! The Metacam would be the more likely culprit for the upset stomach, as this is a common side effect with NSAIDs - but the omega-3 supplement could certainly be a possibility.

I would suggest calling your veterinarian to let them know that Diesel has been having stomach issues on his meds. They may suggest trying him on a different NSAID such as Rimadyl or Galliprant, to see if he tolerates this better.
