Is it safe to fly my 10-year-old Shar Pei dog internationally?

This is a great question! Yes dogs can fly by plane; in fact, when I moved from the USA to New Zealand, I shipped out two dogs and two cats with me. They made that trip just fine. Airlines typically require a health certificate from a vet before the dog is allowed to fly, and I would check with the airlines as to their requirements for transporting pets. Again in my experience, the airlines have treated my animals well, and I would expect that of any airline :-)

Great question! You can move Jasmine and she will be fine. I moved from the US to New Zealand with two dogs and two cats, and they made the trip without any problem. It is stressful, but they do adjust and many people do it all the time. Be sure to find a reputable pet transporter, and check out the animal import laws and requirements. New Zealand, for example, had a ton of tests I had to do starting six months before my animals were allowed to travel to New Zealand, and then had to be in quarantine for a month. Most, if not all airlines, transport animals in a temperature controlled and pressurized cargo hold separate from the luggage compartment. Animals are typically last to be loaded and the first to be unloaded to minimize time in the hold. You may even request to watch your pet being loaded/unloaded. It is true some pets have died in transit but I do not have statistics. You would need to inquire with the specific airline. Being a Pug can make flight/travel a bit more risky, especially if Chief gets stressed easily. Many airlines allow pets in the cabin. You would need to call the airline you are flying well in advance to secure a spot and to pay any additional fees if necessary. Chief should have an exam with your veterinarian prior to travel. I suggest contacting the Australian embassy to confirm all his travel papers, microchipping and vaccines are in order to prevent him from being quarantined when you arrive at your destination.

You will need to check with the airline to see if they will allow Sam to travel in the cabin with you. Given he is 8 pounds, this may be ok but I cannot say for certain. Give the airline a call. I didn't have to sedate him, but that's not recommended when a dog travels cargo because there is no one to monitor him. He was in his crate, which was his safe space and made him relax. Talk to your vet about anxiety medication to calm them. This will control the vocal one so it will not be an issue. If the older shih Tzu has renal disease and having a shorter nose I would make that one that travels in your lap so the airline is not responsible for her at all and you can monitor her and make sure she get water as needed. You may have to take 2 trips, splitting them up to get everyone to your new home safely.

I get that worry! When I moved from the US to New Zealand, I took my Boxer, who was also an anxious dog. Very long flight but he made it just fine. Dogs do tend to settle pretty well on there flights. It’s important to get him used to his crate and staying in long periods of time. It will become a safe space for him, and will make the trip easier. I hope this helps Scott!
