My anxious dog is flying to UK. Can he travel in cabin, not cargo?

Great question! Funnily enough, I faced this same problem when I moved from the US to New Zealand. I also had a dog who had a problem with separation anxiety who had to be in quarantine for four weeks. When in quarantine, Tinna will be kept in a large cage and having an enclosed space may help with her separation anxiety. You can also let the people running the quarantine know she has problems with separation anxiety, and you can see if they will let you put a DAP diffuser in her cage. This diffuser helps dogs with anxiety. You can also talk to your vet before you go about putting her on an anti-anxiety medication which the quarantine people can administer to her as needed. My own dog was just fine traveling and being in quarantine, and I hope Tinna will be the same :-)

I get that worry! When I moved from the US to New Zealand, I took my Boxer, who was also an anxious dog. Very long flight but he made it just fine. Dogs do tend to settle pretty well on there flights. It’s important to get him used to his crate and staying in long periods of time. It will become a safe space for him, and will make the trip easier. I hope this helps Scott!

Several different drugs are available for this purpose. The drugs I use the most often for this sort of situation include trazodone, alprazolam (Xanax), and acepromazine. The last of these drugs will not provide any relief for anxiety for Muttley, instead it will simply tranquilize him. The other two will have both sedative and anti-anxiety activity. Discuss the situation with your veterinarian and determine which option you believe will be best. Hope this works out. If your pup is going to be travelling in the cabin, for the sake of the other passengers the use of the tranquilizer may be the best option.

This is a great question! Yes dogs can fly by plane; in fact, when I moved from the USA to New Zealand, I shipped out two dogs and two cats with me. They made that trip just fine. Airlines typically require a health certificate from a vet before the dog is allowed to fly, and I would check with the airlines as to their requirements for transporting pets. Again in my experience, the airlines have treated my animals well, and I would expect that of any airline :-)

I would advise that you contact the airlines that you are flying with. Seeing that Charlotte is a service dog, you should be able to work out a plan for her to fly in the cabin with you. I understand your stress and anxiety over this but I'm sure that you can resolve this by contacting your airlines and discussing this with them. I hope you and Charlotte are able to fly together and that you have a safe trip.

Most, if not all airlines, transport animals in a temperature controlled and pressurized cargo hold separate from the luggage compartment. Animals are typically last to be loaded and the first to be unloaded to minimize time in the hold. You may even request to watch your pet being loaded/unloaded. It is true some pets have died in transit but I do not have statistics. You would need to inquire with the specific airline. Being a Pug can make flight/travel a bit more risky, especially if Chief gets stressed easily. Many airlines allow pets in the cabin. You would need to call the airline you are flying well in advance to secure a spot and to pay any additional fees if necessary. Chief should have an exam with your veterinarian prior to travel. I suggest contacting the Australian embassy to confirm all his travel papers, microchipping and vaccines are in order to prevent him from being quarantined when you arrive at your destination.

I recommend providing blankets and toys that may make her feel more comfortable. You can ask your veterinarian for light sedative medications that you can give prior to the flight to help her relax.
