My dog has kidney disease. What flea & tick medicine is safe?

No worries. You can safely switch up flea medication every 2-4 weeks no problem. All flea prevention is labeled as safe for dogs but pets can have adverse reactions to just about any medication unfortunately. But these are not expected to happen. Great question! Nexgard kills the deer tick as well as fleas and American dog tick/rocky mountain tick, and lone star tick. It is an oral pill as well, so I would us that for your dogs. Because Nexgard doesn't protect again heartworms, you will have to give your dogs Heartgard as well, which is available by prescription only from the vet. Advantix is a spot on treatment that treats the same things as Nexgard, but you would also have to use Heartgard as well for the heartworms. These two medications (Nexgard and Advantix) are for dogs only. As for the cats, Simparica prevents five types of ticks, so this may work for your cats :-)

I would recommend pursuing other options such as topical anti-flea medication similar to frontline or advantage or even an oral medication such as Nexguard These tend to be safer for dogs your puppies age and have less side effects.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Benson. There are a variety of safe flea and tick preventive medications. I prefer topical formulas because the flea or tick is repelled. When you give an oral chew the flea or tick has to bite your pet to die. This will still kill the pest, but it allows diseases to spread to your pet. For that reason, I prescribe Vextra 3D. Frontline Plus is also a good product, but does not cover quite as many pests as Vectra. Vinegar and water will not be effective. I hope this information helps!

I occasionally see toxicity issues with some of the over-the-counter topical flea products like Hartz, Sergeant's, etc. - this is more commonly a problem in cats, but can sometimes be an issue with small dogs as well, especially if they've been dosed above their weight range. All of the prescription flea/tick medications currently on the market (Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, etc.) are quite safe and effective.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Tyson has Lyme disease he should be put on a good flea and tick medication like Nexgard year round. Plus ticks carry many other diseases besides Lyme disease. Once he is healthy I would also consider vaccinating him for Lyme. Dogs can get re-infected with Lyme disease despite being exposed previously. I would also check urine samples twice yearly for the development of protein in his urine. Protein in the urine can be an indicator of Lyme nephropathy which is a devastating kidney disease from Lyme. Not all dogs get this secondary complication. Hello, so sorry to hear that Kya had this problem with the Nexgard. Personally, if my dog had a reaction to one of the oral flea medications (like Nexgard) I would not using any oral products in the future. I suggest you switch to a Seresto Collar. ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/seresto-flea-and-tick-collar-for-dogs ) One collar lasts 6-8 months depending on how much swimming/bathing the dogs does. I think you will be happier (as will Kya) with this collar. It is almost less expensive than using a monthly prevention. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
