My dog reacts to flea/tick meds. Is switching to Nexgard safe?

Hello, so sorry to hear that Kya had this problem with the Nexgard. Personally, if my dog had a reaction to one of the oral flea medications (like Nexgard) I would not using any oral products in the future. I suggest you switch to a Seresto Collar. ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/seresto-flea-and-tick-collar-for-dogs ) One collar lasts 6-8 months depending on how much swimming/bathing the dogs does. I think you will be happier (as will Kya) with this collar. It is almost less expensive than using a monthly prevention. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Yes, you can give Vicky Bravecto after having been on Nexguard for a few months. Bravecto and Nexguard are in the same class of medication, so just continue as you would with Nexguard for the first dose of Bravecto. I would wait at least two weeks after giving Nexguard before giving Bravecto.

Nexgard is a great preventative and I would give it more time before switching to something else. Hopefully the scratching is not a reaction to it as that would be quite unusual. If the itchiness continues despite giving it a few days, that would likely be due to allergies rather than a cause of using Nexgard. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

The two products have different active ingredients (which is the point for your switch) and even if they didn't, you wouldn't overdose Pepe with doses two weeks apart, so you're good to go! You have a few options. If you want an all in one product, try Trifexis. Otherwise you will two separate products. You might try Simparica (fleas/ticks) and Interceptor (heartworm/intestinal worms). I also recommend to have Sparky's stool checked for worms in case that was a round worm. For that parasite, pets are often given bolus dewormings since people can get that worm. That will clear up the infection faster.

I have prescribed many doses of Nexgard to dogs and puppies of all sizes and ages. There are no known contraindications with this product so it should be extremely safe to use. Now just remember that all dogs are different and they all don't react to the same products or drugs in the same manner, so it's always possible that you try Nexgard and you notice some problems. This would be uncommon although not out of the question. I would not hesitate to use it on my dogs although right now I use a topical product for fleas/ticks. Even though fleas and ticks need to bite a pet in order for Nexgard to work, it kills the parasites quickly enough to prevent them from causing either flea infestations or from transmitting different tick-borne diseases. However, no product is 100% effective. I think you're being very proactive in looking for repellant options to protect Milo on your upcoming camping trip! Topical products like K9 Advantix II (available over the counter) or Vectra 3D (prescription-based), or Seresto collars (available over the counter) are all labeled to repel new ticks and Advantix II also repels mosquitoes. To my knowledge, no products actually repel fleas. Don't worry - they all kill fleas quickly, so an infestation isn't a concern. I often recommend using any one of these products in conjunction with Nexgard if a high-risk situation is needed. However, since I don't know Milo's medical history, I strongly recommend first calling his vet to confirm that it's safe for him to use one of these products.
