My dog has a red itchy rash from licking. Coconut oil didn't help. What to do?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach! In my experience, I've not seen coconut oil do much to relieve inflammation and allergies. I would instead recommend that you use a shampoo such as Douxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly. You can find this shampoo easily online. I would also recommend using welactin omega 3 fish oil and essential 6 spot on by dermoscent. Malacetic conditioning spray can also be used and applied to the affected area 2 to 3 times per day until resolved. All of the above recommended products can be found online. If this does not help then I would consider prescription medications such as Apoquel or Cytopoint, both of which are prescription drugs that will need to be prescribed by Sherry's veterinarian.

This itching can be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. Coconut oil will not help with these causes. If Patton isn't up to date on his flea treatment, he will need a spot on treatment such as Advantage or Revolution. You will need to disinfect the environment as well. If he is up to date on his flea treatment, I recommend taking him into the vet for an exam today or tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment.

You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for a skin exam. Your dog could be suffering from an allergy, mites, fleas, a bacterial or fungal infection. each of these requires a different treatment, so it is important to find out what is causing the itch. Your vet will do a thorough exam and maybe a a skinscrape. He will then discuss the options with you and then prescribe medications, possibly give an injection to stop the itching. Please do not put coconut oil on the lesions nor put it in your dog's food. Unfortunately, contrary to common belief, it is not a remedy for all but can also cause allergic reactions.

Prevent him from licking the area by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. You can wash the area daily with soap and rinse well. Once it is dried, you can apply a dab of coconut oil and rub it in well. Make sure he does not lick this as it can cause GI upset. Yes, dogs love the taste of coconut oil, and will often lick any topical medications off - either because they enjoy the taste or because they are still itchy underneath the topical medication. I would recommend a soothing shampoo to calm down the razor burn or itch, I like Dechra DermaLyte Shampoo. You can also add fish oils to her food to help with itching. You may ask your groomer what kind of shampoo or products they put on Keira, because she may be allergic to it. If she is still itchy in a few days, she may need to see a vet, sometimes razor burn can cause a mild skin infection and she would benefit from prescription antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

Anything you apply will likely be licked off before it has a chance to help. Your best option is to place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking. Contact your veterinarian and ask about OTC or prescription antihistamines that may help if an allergic reaction is involved. A fish oil supplement may also help promote healthy skin. If symptoms persist, consider an exam to rule out infection or injury. You can also discuss allergy testing, food allergies and environmental allergies in depth with your veterinarian.

Poor Tardis! I would try to use a cortisone or Benadryl spray on the area and put an cone collar on her to prevent the licking. You can also give her oral Benadryl if needed for itching. See link below. If it persists despite trying this or if it worsens then yes, I would certainly take her in. Your vet will be able to give her stronger meds to help this heal faster.
