Can I combine flea and tick treatments? For example, using topical and oral tick medications at the same time?

The short answer is...it is not recommended in most situations. Combining different medications may increase the risk of negative side effects, adverse reactions or can lead to an overdose situation which could put your pet's life at risk.
Due to the variety of different products available on the veterinary market today, pet owners are encouraged to discuss the best preventative option for their individual pet with their veterinarian.
If a pet has fleas, most pet owners want to find the fastest treatment option available. In these cases, Capstar (nitenpyram) is an oral flea medication available over the counter for dogs and cats that starts treating fleas in 30 minutes and kills 90 percent of adult fleas on a pet within four hours. While Capstar dosing can continue as frequently as every day, topical flea and tick preventatives can be used in conjunction with this oral medication to provide longer lasting treatment and prevention.
Oral flea and tick preventives available for dogs with a prescription from your veterinarian are Credelio, Nexgard, Simparica, and Bravecto. Products that are available with a prescription from your veterinarian for flea treatment include Comfortis or Trifexis. These products also begin to kill fleas quickly and provide ongoing prevention, and do not usually require the concurrent use of a topical medication. If a topical flea preventative fails, most oral products can be safely used concurrently.

    I don't recommend it. Typically you do not need to combine multiple flea and tick medications to control these parasites, one flea and tick medication is enough. In addition, too much can cause a toxic reaction. I also personally do not like flea and tick collars, they aren't very effective and can cause skin reactions. I hope this helps!

Is combining flea shampoo and topical treatment safe for pets?
I would recommend using caution if the flea/tick shampoo and the topical product both contain permethrins, particularly if you have a small dog. I recommend avoiding all over the counter products containing permethrins for cats since they are prone to toxicity. If you use a flea/tick shampoo with permethrin and a topical product that has a different active ingredient it should be safer. An even safer alternative would be to use blue Dawn dishsoap for bathing, followed by flea combing and then applying a topical product.

Is it safe to combine Capstar and Nexgard for my dog's flea treatment?
The combination of the products is known to be safe, so there would be no worry of it causing any adverse effects. I assume the vet meant to give the capstar to quickly kill any adults and to give the nexgard to ensure he doesn't get re-infested from fleas in the environment. This would be an effective way to kill all the fleas and perhaps your vet has other reasons for prescribing the combination (maybe they have experience using one versus the combination). The Nexgaurd alone should work though, so if you really don't want to just give one, then that would be the one would recommend. I would recommend calling the veterinarian and asking if this is OK though. It's also good to treat the environment for fleas, because fleas can reproduce and nest in the environment and continually cause an issue. My dog has fleas. Can I use Capstar and K9 Advantix together?
You can use both products on the same day so it is fine to start the Advantix at any time. There are better products that Advantix. Top products for dogs are oral products such as Simparica and Nexgard. Top products for cats are topicals such as Revolution and Cheristan. There is also an oral product called Comfortis that both dogs and cats can take. You will need to switch all the pets over to a good flea product. Make sure to discuss these products with your veterinarian first. These products are generally safe for all pets but there are some conditions which are contraindicated for the oral products. Cleaning up and treating the house and yard will also help but it will not clear all the fleas. The main control is making sure the pets are on good products. This is what will ultimately stop the infestation. Also remember every female fleas lays about 50 eggs a day and it could take up to 6 months before the eggs hatch. Most oral flea preventatives are safe to give along with topicals, but it would help to know exactly what the oral medication was and when medications were given. You may want to ask your veterinarian what flea product they would recommend in your area - in some areas fleas could be resistant to the medications. You also may need to treat your home - calling a pest control company is safest.

Is it safe to add tick prevention to my dog's Advantage Multi?
Most of veterinarians will avoid using two topical medications, in the hopes of avoiding interactions or side effects. Each product has different chemicals and if you use two topical products, you want to be sure they are safe together. Have you thought about using something like a Preventic collar? This collar works very well for ticks. You put it on Benji when you are going to areas that have ticks. When you are no longer worried about ticks, you store the collar in a baggie in a cool, dark place. It will remain effective for 6-8 months. Is it safe to combine Nexgard and Advantix for dog flea control?
Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Not 100% sure what you mean by an Advantix flea bath. Advantix is a topical flea treatment applied on the skin of dogs. Yes you can use Nexgard along with Advantix. Great multimodal flea/tick strategy. After you have used both oral and topical treatments together for 3 months or so, any environmental problem inside the home should be addressed. That gives enough time for most if not all of the immature stages to mature and be killed by the products. After that time period, you may be able to drop back down to one product each month. Depends on your geographical location and your particular flea problem. Good luck

Are there risks to using different flea treatments together on my dog?
Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dani is super cute! I think that is just A LOT of chemicals that are not necessary. Fipronil, which Frontline, just isn't that good anymore. I see multiple pets a week that have infestations and are using Fipronil. Flea baths do nothing to prevent fleas from jumping back on by the next day. Fipronil shouldn't by used 2 days before or 2 days after bathing or the product will not work well. With all the new products out there: Seresto collar, Bravecto, Simparica and Nexgard I see not reason to put 3 different chemicals on your dog. I am sure she will be fine but almost every product comes with risks and side effects which are likely compounded by using 3 at once. Most are chemicals aimed specifically at insect biology not mammalian. I would choose one product and use that. I hope this helps and I wish you and Dani the best!
