How do i get rid of and prevent tear stains on my 6 month old Cavachon?

Great question! There are tear stain removers you can buy from a pet store that helps remove Luna's tear stains. Some people report that quality of water affects tear stains, so you can give her purified water. Clean her face twice a day with a damp cloth to remove excess tears. I'd recommend using a glass, porcelain, or stainless steel bowl instead of plastic, as plastic bowls crack and can retain bacteria. I'd also recommend having Luna seen by a vet, as excessive tear stains can be caused by ingrown eye lashes or abnormally large tear producing glands, which can be treated surgically. Finally stress and poor diet can contribute to the product of tear stains, so make sure to feed her a high quality puppy formulated food. I recommend Royal Canin or Hills Science diet.

Yes, you can moisten a cotton ball and carefully wipe the area. Be very careful to avoid her eyes.
To minimize tear staining, feed a quality diet. Additives and low quality ingredients may cause allergic reactions which can lead to excess tearing. "Hard" water or water with high mineral content can also lead to tear staining. Offer filtered or bottled water instead. Keep her eyes and face as dry as you can.
Consider adding a veterinary probiotic or some organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to her diet. Either are thought to help minimize staining.

Pets can develop tear stains due to many issues including food, water quality, minerals in the water and some dogs produce the discoloration naturally due to blocked tear ducts. Since this has just started, I recommend to have Bella checked by the veterinarian who will look for clues to a medical condition like allergies or an infection. If no medical cause is identified, you may try a product like Angel Eye which comes in wipes or an oral supplement. You can also try allowing her only distilled water. You can also try a food change to something like Nutro Essentials which has non-GMO products and no artificial ingredients. Avoid grain free diets. Any food or water changes will likely take 6-8 weeks to see any difference. I hope this helps.

I feel your pain on this issue! I have a Persian, and he gets terrible tear stains. I use a tear stain remover on my cat, which I get from the pet store. I would get one of those, as they help remove the stains. You can try feeding him from a porcelain or metal bowl. Plastic bowls can crack and retain bacteria, which can cause continued problems with excessive tearing. You can also give him filtered water instead of tap water, as that's reported to help as well.

My Shih Tzu has tear stains. Is her chicken diet causing them?

While your groomer means well, they are not a vet and are not schooled in animal nutrition. I would listen to your vet, they are the ones who attended veterinary school and have education in animal nutrition. Tear stains are actually common in breeds like Shih Tzus. You can feed Ruby from a ceramic or stainless steel bowl to see if that helps, and there are teat stain removers which can help. Best of luck.
