Why is Purina Pro Plan better quality than Alpo or Beneful dog food?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 119 lbs

So I asked a question about dog food not long ago and a vet here said that Vets usually recommend foods like Hills and Purina because big companies have medical and nutrition specialists on staff. Purina is pretty big and if their foods are checked, compared to the boutique outfits, why Pro Plan and not Alpo or beneful? Those are also made by Purina. Just an example.

Foods made by Purina are good, but ones like ProPlan have higher quality ingredients than say Alpo or Beneful. In my opinion, Purina is the best of the supermarket brands, so getting a food made by Purina whether it be Purina One or Beneful is fine. I hope this helps!

There really isn't controversy about Purina's ingredients. They are excellent. They have veterinary nutritionists on staff to make sure the food is good. Canada and Wellness do not have veterinary nutritionists on their staff. I would go for Purina ProPlan, but Hill's is equally as good (they also have veterinary nutritionists on staff). What's the difference between Purina Pro Plan and Purina One for kittens?

Obviously they are made by the same company (Purina), but Purina ProPlan is the high quality food. It has more nutrients and contains more real meats that Purina One. Purina is a good brand of food, so it's fine to feed either, but give Mac the ProPlan if you want a higher quality food and more real meat in the food. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Is Farmina N&D dry cat food healthier than Proplan for my cat?

Purina Proplan is one of the three highest quality foods I recommend to clients. The other two are Royal Canin and Hills. They follow veterinary nutritionist guidelines and current evidence based research. Gluten intolerance is extremely rare in pets and gluten content has no bearing on a food's quality. It is also important to not overfeed protein as it can harm the kidneys, so foods with higher meat content may not be better. I hope this helps.

Is expensive dog food worth it for my puppy, or are cheaper options okay?

Great question! The difference is the ingredients. The pro food will have higher quality ingredients, more specially the protein source and the cuts used in the food. That is why it is more expensive. If you can't afford the pro food, you can try Iams. It's still a high quality food but it is not as expensive as Pro Plan, Eukanuba, and Hills :-)
